Barbara Gessel Obituary

Barbara Gessel, JD 1962-2019

Barbara "Barb" Gessel, of Saugatuck, Michigan, loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer since August 2017. She was 56 years old. Barb was the daughter of Raymond and Kathryn (Rauch) Gessel.

Barb was born February 3, 1962 in Marietta, Ohio. She enjoyed a loving relationship and marriage to Jennifer Roe for 14 years, and she was a devoted mother to Anthony Lazzaro.

Barb was of the Catholic faith and a member of St. Peter's Church in Saugatuck, Michigan.

She attended Ohio University for her undergraduate studies and went on to obtain a juris doctorate degree from the University of Toledo Law School. Her meaningful and lengthy career spanned multiple industries with many roles, focusing in the areas of labor relations and human resources. While most of her career was spent touching lives in the Toledo area, her final role was Chief Human Resources Officer for the Mercy Health Network, Iowa, where she retired following her diagnosis. Upon retirement, her dream was to live near a lake, so she and Jennifer settled in the resort area of Saugatuck, Michigan, where she enjoyed many trips to Oval Beach and bike rides along the lake shore.

The highlight of Barb's life always included spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed her annual family trips to Myrtle Beach and golf trips with friends. Her vacation destinations were usually dictated by the number of beaches and golf courses. One of her many joys was her deep and meaningful relationships with her infinite number of friends.

Barb was preceded in death by her father, infant sister Karen and her father- and mother-in-law, Raymond and Mary Jane Roe. Barb is survived by her wife; son; mother; and three siblings, Alan (Sherry) Gessel (Highland Village TX), Tom (Kelly) Gessel (Durango, CO) and Erica (Fred) Golden (Galloway, OH); her sister and brother-in-laws, Patrice (David) Gilbert, Michael (Terri) Roe and Matthew Roe. Many wonderful nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and many dear friends also survive.

Barb's best pal, Sammy, her toy yorkie that came into her life 10 years ago, brought her so much joy and comfort, especially over this past 1.5 years. He was her favorite side kick and was at her side or on her lap constantly.

It was Barb's wish to be cremated. Funeral services will be held at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 South Reynolds Road, Toledo, Ohio, with visitation from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Saturday, January 12 and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 13. A Catholic prayer service will begin at 4:00 pm on Sunday, officiated by Father Joseph Cardone.

In lieu of flowers, please consider Barb's request for contributions to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Please leave a condolence message for the family at CoyleFuneralHome.com.

I just found that Barb has passed. Four years later. We were great friends in the 80´s in Toledo. The memories go on and on. I always thought I would see her again. My heart is broken

My deepest sympathy to Barb's close friends and family. I worked with Barb in the Toledo Edison Legal Department for several years. Her strength of character and gentle nature was always a gift to her colleagues. Rest in Peace, dear sweet friend.

I'm very sad to hear of Barb's passing. I met her when she was a high school student when her family lived in St. Clairsville. I had the privilege of taking her to a couple of homecoming and prom dances and had many good times. I always knew her to be fun-loving, kind, smart, ambitious ... and what a smile! She has obviously touched many people's lives in a positive way throughout her life. She will be missed and never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to her wonderful family.

I worked with Barb at both Toledo Edison and The Blade. She was always great to work with - knowledgeable, questioning, personable, and calm, even in tough situations. She was interested in doing the right thing, even if it wasn't the popular thing. Tough to see her go so early.

I was so saddened to hear the news about Barb. I have not seen her in many years but I loved her energy. She was smart, funny and successful!!!! I wanted the family to know that I am thinking about them at this difficult time.
My sincerest condolences to the Gessel family.

Photos I found of a trip to Myrtle Beach that I took with Tom and his family. Fun times with Barb and the whole family.

We were shocked and saddened to learn that our new neighbor and friend, Barb, had passed away. We enjoyed seeing Barb and Jennifer at various restaurants around town and also on their new e-bikes!

Dear Barb's family,

Barb was a great adviser, helper and a trusted attorney. She gave everyone an example on how to live life.

She was one of the most integral persons I ever met.

Hopefully her memories will help sustain you all through her loss.

Rest in Peace Barb,

Rick Maier, Toledo Edison 1986-2001.

Barb,
I will certainly miss our conversations and scrambles golf outings.
You were the first female Trained K-9 Handler I ever had the privilege to work with.
You were courageous in pursuit of justice for everyone you believed in. The only Harley Golf Cart Owner I have personally known. Your heart has always been in the right place at the right time. I will not expound on our golf games but concede to your better skills. Will miss you my friend! God's speed and Fore.
John
