Clarence Terry Obituary

TERRY Mr. Clarence Jr., MS Mr. Clarence Terry, Jr., age 59, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13 2008, in the Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by his loving wife of 34 years, Ardenia Jones Terry, family and friends. Clarence was born August 3, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio to Clarence Sr. and Annie Pearl Terry, both of blessed memory. He received his formal education in Cleveland Public Schools at Doan Elementary, Harry E. Davis Junior High and John Hay High. Clarence received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Bowling Green State University. He was baptized at Bethel AME in Cleveland at an early age. He was a charter member of New Horizon United Methodist Church of Toledo, Ohio. Clarence was employed at Bowling Green State University for 35 years, retiring in May of 2008, as director of Multicultural Recruitment. During his tenure, he recruited thousands of minority students from New York, Texas, Michigan, Georgia, Washington, DC, California, and Ohio. He provided hundreds of families with guidance and direction. He saw his BGSU responsibility as being, "to assist minority students to reach their lifelong dream of being a college graduate." His road to achievement started at BGSU in 1968 through the Student Development Program. Shortly after his graduation, the director offered him the opportunity to work as a financial aid advisor. He later moved on from that position to become the director of the program. When student recruitment was moved to the Admissions Office in 1985. Clarence then became the director of Multicultural Recruitment. Brian Robinson, a graduate, attributes his coming to BGSU to Clarence. "Clarence Terry came to my high school in Toledo. In fact, he came twice. I wanted to go to college but I didn't know how to go about getting there. He let me know about financial aid," Robinson said. Clarence wanted BGSU to be a diverse campus and he kept that focus by changing the University's demographics ensuring that minority students were in the mosaic fabric of the campus. Clarence was a member of the Amazon Lodge #4, Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Ohio Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (OACRAO), the Ohio Association of College Admissions Counseling (OACAC), a Connecting Link of the Toledo Chapter of Links, Inc., and the Travel Coordinator with T-Town Travelers, Ltd. An independent travel agent with the American Travel Bureau, Clarence loved to travel with his wife. Together they traveled the world. Mr. Clarence Terry Jr. is survived by his wife, Dr. Ardenia Jones Terry; two sisters, Theresa (James) Pawnell of Cahokia, IL and Lillie Terry of Cleveland, OH; uncles, Roosevelt Wilson, Alfred (Kathy) Wilson, and Earl (Doris) Wilson, all of Cleveland, OH; three loving brothers-in-law, John (Fran) Jones, Eldred (Vanessa) R. Jones, both of Atlanta, GA and Otis (Sarah) Glover of Birmingham, AL; two nephews, Eric G. Hearne of Cleveland, OH and Otis Glover Jr. of Birmingham, AL; two nieces, Antenica Williams of Toledo, OH and Otisa (Paul) Glover Walker of Birmingham, AL; and two special friends from elementary school, Jerry Hardaway of Cleveland, OH and Donald Morton of Toledo, OH. He leaves to cherish his memory from Ghana, West Africa, Dr. Frank, and Eric (Christie) Ampadu of Minneapolis, MN, William (Victoria) Ampadu, Linda (Jonathan) Yawson, Patricia Okyere all of Columbus, OH, Kenneth (Nana) Okyere of Chicago, IL, and Michael Commey of Toledo, OH and a man's best friend, Little Miss Monster. Ardenia, please accept my sympathy for your tremendous loss. Such sweet memories I have of you and Clarence meeting at BGSU, and starting to date. I hope I had a hand in that! We had some long talks back then. (smile) I pray that your broken heart will be healed by the presence of the Lord. He said in Isaiah that He came "to heal the broken-hearted." I know He can, personally. I shall keep you in my prayers, always.
Love,

I just heard of the loss of Clarence and my deepest thoughts of God's hands shall guide you (Ardenia) as you gather yourself through the grieving process. The Lord has given "Big Clarence" a home and I am grateful for that. He gave so much to others and the blessings will also come to you because you were his support partner. Know that your memories will always keep him close with you. My heartfelt memories of a wonderful friend who was my guide when I entered Bowling Green State University. He use to take me home when I was a student. He was always a caring and good man. I too will miss him ,however, I am fortunate to have known him.

Dear Ardenia,
I am so very sorry that Snooky is not with you any longer. I can't imagine how it must be to not have your partner after 34 years of life together. I do know that the life you guys shared was full of good times and wonderful memories. I hope that in the days to come you will be able to hold on to those in order to help you in creating your new life plan. I love you and should you need anything at all you know how to reach me.

Ardenia & Little Miss Monster,

I pray that the Spirit of comfort will over take you. I thank you and Clarence for encouraging and supporting not just me but other students to go after their hearts desires. When you hear the saying "No child left behind" it makes you stop and think "No student left behind". I believe that you and C.T. had that as a mission. Thank you !

C.T. will always be "Bossman"

Mrs. Terry: I was very sorry to hear of Clarence's passing. To be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord. Clarence often shared your trips and his hope of building a visitation home in Africa. He was an excellent resource and encorage many young people to attend BGSU. He was a friend of 20+ years. Our lives have been enriched through his life. I was one of many guidance counselors he assisted. I was also a member of the Guidance Advisory Board with Clarence. He will be missed.

Dr. Terry:

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I will always remember your husband traversing BG's Campus in pursuit of his mission in life. I watched Bro. Terry perform his God appointed mission of uplifting young folks. This was an inspiration for me. I remain both grateful and prayerful.

I met Clarence when I first came to BGSU as an Assistant Professor. He was always welcoming face and interested in what was happening with me. I am deeply sorry for his passing, BGSU will not be the same. Undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds will never find someone like Clarence who cared about finding them financial assistance and who continued to keep them on track until graduation. You and your family have my few words of sympathy.

To the Terry Family:
I would like to express my deep sorrow for the loss of your loved one. Mr. Terry was the reason I went to BGSU. He visited my high school and gave my graduation class the opportunity to attend BGSU by waiving our application fees :). I am positive that his legacy at BG will live on forever. May you all find strength during these trying times.
God Bless

In brotherly love and peace how do I begin to say good bye or even express memories to one who made a difference in many lives including myself. BGSU in the early 70's was Clarence Terry to many of us when we were young gifted and black and proud. The support that you gave us the black student body of up 500 African-American students during the wonderful years. You were there as a leader and a friend. You will live in the heart and minds that you touched. May God bless you and your family always. Goodbye my friend and brother in Christ! Marion V.
