Clifford Charles Nelson II

1929 - 2021

Clifford Charles Nelson II, 91, of Waterville, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Hospice of NW Ohio – Perrysburg location. He was born in Toledo on December 11, 1929 to Clifford and Velma Mell Nelson. Growing up on the East side of Toledo, he graduated from the well-known Waite High School where one of the many things he learned to love was the Original Tony Packo's, either before or after their famous home team football games.

He served state-side in the US Army at Fort Monmouth, NJ during the Korean War. Upon completion of military service, Cliff graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor's degree in business. He was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. After graduating he worked at Johns Manville in Waterville a few years in personnel where he was fortunate to become a friend of scientist, inventor, artist and master craftsman in glass, Dominick (Nick) Labino. While working at Johns Manville, he continued studies in education obtaining his master's degree at Toledo University, then changing career path to become a teacher at Rogers High School as a business teacher and business department chairman until retirement.

Cliff also was a member of the Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Ohio – Rubicon Lodge #237 - Waterville, American Legion Post 384 – Whitehouse and Maumee – BG, Elks Lodge #1850. During his career in education, he became active with the Toledo Education Association serving as President. As things changed, he became a member of Toledo Federation of Teachers and enjoyed serving Toledo Public schools as an Intern, Intervention and Evaluation Program consultant. He also participated on district High School business textbook selection and curriculum development committees.

Cliff had many outside interests and hobbies as he subcontracted the building of his first house on Noward Rd, Waterville and did many remodeling projects for his daughter and son-in-law, Whitehouse. He enjoyed for several years taking his family along with a 1st grade friend of his daughter and another couple to Lake Meauwataka in MI, a place he and his two brothers went for many summers during their grade school years. Later, he loved taking his family, friends and boat up to Ludington, MI for salmon fishing adventures. He built and flew R.C. airplanes, a wooden model ship of the USS Constitution and other wood making projects such as his felt covered poker table which he was asked by friends to duplicate and enjoyed complying. He also enjoyed hunting for Morel mushrooms and especially playing golf with various friends for approximately 20 years until health issues began to interfere. He expressed his desire to become well enough to play again right up until the end.

Cliff was married to his college sweetheart, Betty Lou Ferris Nelson, in New York City, December 29, 1951. Betty passed unexpectedly in April 2017. Cliff is survived by his daughter, Jamie (Bruce) Laurie; son, Clifford C Nelson III; his younger brother, M. Dale Nelson (Amanda); his sister-in-law, Guelda Nelson; his sister-in-law, Ruth Ferris (Don) Murray; his cousin, Nadine Nelson Taylor and his many nieces and nephews, Waynard Nelson, Elizabeth Nelson Corresell and on the Murray side, Tom, Connie, Diane, Christy, Sandy, Lori, John, Jackie, and Colleen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest brother Mell Nelson.

I am sorry to read about the death of Cliff Nelson. His parents and my parents were friends and through the years shared many good times together. My brother Bernard was like another son in the Nelson family spending time at their home building and tinkering with small engines. Bernard and Mell Nelson were life-long best friends. I send my sincere sympathy to the Nelson family and especially to Clifford's.

Mr. Nelson was a superb teacher--among the best. I thoroughly enjoyed every session in his Business Law class at Rogers High School. To this day I draw on the valuable knowledge I gained from his enlightening lectures. Thank you Mr. Nelson!

Mr. Nelson taught us typing during summer school in 1962. My career as a journalist would never have materialized without that skill. So many times during the ensuing years I thanked him silently.
