Dean Berkey Obituary

Dean A. Berkey

December 11, 1933 - December 7, 2021

Dean A. Berkey, formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a short illness on December 7, 2021, in Farmington, Connecticut.

Mr. Berkey was born on December 11, 1933, to Charles E. Berkey and Mabel L. (Parks) Berkey in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he spent his youth.

After graduating from Johnstown High School in 1952, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served as a Sergeant in the Corps until his honorable discharge in 1960.

He met his wife while home on leave and married Alice Joann (Zahoran) Berkey at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Johnstown. After a three-day honeymoon, he served nine months as a military technical specialist installing early warning radar systems in an undisclosed location in Turkey. Upon completion of this project, his wife joined him in Istanbul where they began an extensive European honeymoon.

After return from Europe, the couple chose to settle down in Toledo, Ohio, where they raised their children and were active supporters of Sylvania Schools and The University of Toledo athletic programs.

Mr. Berkey spent his career first at Westinghouse during which time he helped install the Mayo Clinic's electric medical record system, then with IBM and spent the final years of his career at The University of Toledo, in Toledo, Ohio, where he served as the University's first Director of Information Systems and then as the Director of Student Records for 18 years prior to retirement in 1992. During the initial years of his career, he completed his studies at the University of Toledo and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in December 1973.

After retirement he lived in Little River, South Carolina and enjoyed the beach life. He was an avid fisher, power boater, golfer and traveler.

He is survived by his children, Jacqueline A. Berkey, Toledo, Ohio, David M. and Alejandro (Perez) Berkey, Chicago, Illinois, and Robert and Jennifer A. (Berkey) Manning, West Hartford, Connecticut; as well as many beloved nephews and nieces.

Mr. Berkey asked that his family enjoy dinner in his memory with his ashes interred with military honors at the Richland Cemetery in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The family requests that gifts be made to The University of Toledo Alumni Fund or the Alzheimer's Association in his name.
