Frank Kunkle Obituary

KUNKLE Frank H. Frank H. Kunkle, 95, formerly of Oxford, Ohio, passed away August 7, 2009, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The son of Henry and Leah Kunkle, Frank was born March 19, 1914, in Kunkle, Ohio, the town named after his great-grandfather. Born into a family of musicians, Frank began playing the trumpet at age seven, and his musical pursuits continued from that day forward. His early performances included numerous appearances in Northwest Ohio with the Kunkle Family Orchestra. A 1932 graduate of Kunkle High School, Frank pursued a music degree at Bowling Green State University, where he was the marimba soloist with the traveling men's glee club. While attending Bowling Green, Frank met Nell Ammons, who would eventually become his wife of 67 years. After transferring to Ohio State University, Frank played the French horn in the well-known OSU Buckeye marching band and graduated with a bachelor's degree in music education in 1938. Frank and Nell were married at the Ammons family farm in Belle Center, Ohio in 1941. After teaching in Pettisville and Hicksville, the couple settled in Wauseon, where they raised three children, Frankie, Jim, and John. For 22 years, Frank directed the Wauseon High School vocal and instrumental music programs. In 1965, the Kunkles moved to Oxford, Ohio, where Frank pursued a master's of music degree in orchestra instruments at Miami University. He continued his career as an orchestra instructor at Talawanda High School. Later, he supervised music student teachers for Miami University. Frank served as music director for several church congregations, including First Christian Church in Wauseon and the Oxford United Methodist Church. In his retirement years, he directed the Oxford Community Band, participated in programs at the Senior Center, and developed a passion for writing his memoirs. His book, entitled "Frankly Speaking," is a collection of stories from his life. In May 2009, Frank and Nell moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, as members of the Fox Run community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Kunkle and Leah Greek Kunkle; step mother, Elsie Kunkle; sisters, Winona Showers and Laura Ethel Schombert; brothers, John, Greek, and Theodore; step brother, Ralph Showers; and great-grandson, Christopher Frandsen. Mr. Kunkle was one of a kind. I sometimes saw him seven days a week. In addition to being the band/chorus director, he was chorus leader at the church we both attended. He was patient and kind. He would tease me about my ski jump nose. I love music am sure it is in part because he made it so enjoyable.

Mr. Kunkle was an important figure in my life. He taught me flute beginning in the 3rd grade and was my band and chorus instructor through high school graduation. I remember him with great fondness and am greatful for having had the opportunity to have known him. I know that my love of music today is in no small measure a result of his wonderful influence. What a great man.

My condolences to his wife and family.

I have many wonderful memories of Mr. Kunkle. He started me on the cello in 4th grade (over 40 years ago!). Through the years he kept in touch with the Riegel kids and came to concerts and asked about us through high school and college (we were all music majors). I'm certainly not the only former student who made music their career, but his influence was great. My condolences and best wishes to the Kunkle family.

I was a student at St. Mary's Catholic grade school (Hamilton) and fondly remember Mr. Kunkle as our music teacher. He was very patient and kind to his students-even though we didn't have much musical talent! May he rest in peace - and God Bless his family left to mourn his loss.

We extend our sympathy to the family. Mr. Kunkle was the teacher who influenced me the most while I was a student at Wauseon. I have wonderful memories of being in band and chorus under his direction for 8 years (back in the 50's). I am grateful to have had that experience.

My sympathies go out to Mr. Kunkle's family. He was more than a teacher to me, he was also a kind friend. He was my band director for eight years at Wauseon HS as well as choir director at our church. I'm so grateful to have known him and able to spend five or six days a week with him for many years. He was an inspiration to so many people.

We enjoyed so much getting acquainted with Frank and Nell in our Aqua Toners class. Frank always brought a lot of joy to our group with his antics and that lovely, sparkling smile. He and Nell have been truley missed. We all cherish these memories.

We always enjoyed "Mr. Kunkle"....he was very patient with me as I tried one instrument after another. (I ended up carrying the flag in the marching band)! He certainly was an inspiration to many young people in Wauseon.

I was fortunate to have had Mr. Kunkle teach me to play saxophone at Marshall Elementary when I was 10 years old (40 yrs ago)and I will never forget how patient, kind and accomplished he was. What a positive experience for a child, and what a gift he was to whomever had the pleasure of learning from him. My deepest condolences to his family.
