Gregory George Alexander

Gregory George Alexander, age 93, died on August 24, 2022 in Toledo, Ohio. He was born on February 12, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Virginia Gregory Alexander and George O. Alexander. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Gregory of Hood River, Oregon and Douglas G. Alexander of Dallas, Texas; plus, granddaughter, Evelynn Larson and her children; and also his good dog, Bobby. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Constance Alexander.

Greg was a graduate of Culver Military Academy, where he was Regimental Commander, and Yale University and the Harvard Law School. He was a retired partner of the law firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, and for 8 years was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Woodville Lime & Chemical Co. As a personal challenge, Greg took and passed the Florida bar examination when he was age 54 as a prelude to being instrumental in the establishment of a Tampa office of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP.

He was always interested in education. He was a member of the Sylvania Board of Education and for ten years was Class Agent of his Yale class. He was also on the Board of the Sylvania Community Services.

Like his own son and his late father, Greg, has a certain passion for golf. He visited Scotland on four occasions where he played such famous courses as St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Muirfield and Royal Dornoch. He also played at Pebble Beach, Pine Valley, Ohio's Muirfield and Florida's Seminole.

He has been a trustee of the Waite-Brand Foundation since 1964, past President of the Child and Family Service of Toledo and on the Board of the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. He was a longtime member and on the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church where he and his wife were married in 1956. He is currently a member of St. Michael's in the hills Episcopal Church. He was a past president of The Toledo Country Club, a member of Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Florida, and the Yale Club of New York City.

Among various organizations, he had been director of Health Care REIT, Inc., Therma-Tru Corp., Aim Packaging Inc. and The Ohio Plate Glass Co. He was also Chairman of the Corporation Law Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association.

It was Greg's wish that any memorials be given to the Culver Educational Foundation for the W. E. Gregory Scholarship Fund, Culver, Indiana 46511-1291; the Sylvania Academic Excellence Foundation, 4747 Holland-Sylvania Road, Sylvania, Ohio 43560; or St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Road, Ottawa Hills, Ohio 43615.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania, Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43623 (419-841-2422). Burial will be private at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania. Condolences can be shared at

I was blessed to have Greg as my mentor when I entered the practice of law in 1966. He was an exceptionally capable attorney, counselor and true gentleman throughout his long life. My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Alexander family.
