Oh my goodness. I was just doing a facebook search for Homer. He was our best man in our wedding. I am in total shock. I do not know how I will be able to tell my husband about Homer. I am just so sad...he was an amazing person and he and my husband played ball at SAU side by side(Shawn played shortstop). I am so sorry for your loss. You are in our prayers.

Tina, when I was home last weekend my Mom showed me the article about your husband. Just wanted to extend my sympathy. After reading the article, I realized that you live in Toledo. I'm in Maumee...if you need an ear, give me a call. I know I haven't talked to you in ages, but what's a little time. Take care...Pam (Borgia) Armstrong

TINA SORRY TO HERE ABOUT YOUR LOST...MY HEART GOES OUT 2 YOUR FAMILY

Brad Roth & Family

August 14, 2009

I was traveling with my family this past week, when one of my former teammates called and informed me of Homer’s passing. Needless to say, I was shocked. Homer was larger than life and seemed invincible as I played with him at SAU. Homer was a great teammate and friend. I have many great memories of our time at SAU both on and off of the field.

As a teammate at SAU, Homer could always be counted on to perform in the clutch. As I have read some of the previous entries, it is without any doubt that Homer could be counted on in clutch as both a husband and father.

As I reflect, life is so fragile and we do not always know or understand God's plan. With that said, I find it that much more important that we have our house in order. I know Homer’s was, which takes me back to the last time I saw Homer (about three years ago at an SAU Alumni game), after the normal hellos and warm-up down the line, Homer & I had a chance to talk in the dugout on a more personal level. The most important things we talked about were our families, their wellbeing and their/our relationships with Jesus Christ. Today, I find this conversation very comforting, I hope it does the same for you.

Please accept our deepest sympathies and prayers in this difficult time. May your faith in Christ and the strength and support of family and friends help get you through this difficult time.

Our love and prayers!

August 13, 2009

To the entire Shields family,
Homer and I had a special bond during my years playing baseball at Spring Arbor and I was always amazed by the things he could do on a baseball field. Maybe even more amazing, however, was the strength of his character and the depth of his convictions. He is the best 3B I've ever played with (including the pros) and one of the finest people I've ever known. There is a hole in Cougar Baseball that will never be repaired. RIP #7 - you will be missed. To the Faimly of Homer Shields,

Homer and I were teammates at Spring Arbor. Homer was truly a one of a kind! A great competitor both on and off the field. To the Shields family, you can be proud of the way Homer carried himself, earning respect from all who played with, and competed against him. Must be that Coach Burbridge needed a great #3 hitter for his new team!

To Mrs. Shields and Children, my thoughts and prayers go out to you during this difficult time.

Tina and family-

I had the unique and fortunate opportunity to play with and coach Homer during his entire Cougar career. What a great teammate, friend and player! His passion and intensity for the game were second to none. Homer was well-respected by all of his teammates, the coaching staff, officials and opponents. Homer knew only one way to play baseball; the right way. Homer would use every single practice as an opportunity to strengthen his game. He never took a practice off or complained. I am confident that Homer has not played his last game. I can just see Coach Burbridge flashing signs to Homer (usually just the hit sign) from Heaven's third base coaching box as Homer gets prepared to swing away. There will never be another #7 quite like Homer. God Bless!

Tina and family

I had the fortunate opportunity to play with and coach Homer for his entire SAC career. What a great guy! Homer was one of the best teammates anyone could ever ask for. I am confident that good ol' #7 has not played his last game and that in God's line-up he will still be playing third base and hitting third. The memories that I have of Homer are ones that I will cherish forever. God Bless!

We wish to send our deepest sympathies to Homer's family. We had the pleasure of spending three baseball seasons at Spring Arbor watching Homer play on championship teams with our son Tracey. He was the most natural ball player I have ever watched. He didnt excel in one area he was just great in all facets of the game. Smooth would be the best word to describe him and off the field he was a role model and gentlemen to all he came in contact with. We were so saddened to hear he was taken at such an early age but Im sure God has big plans for him......

Tina and Family, My heart goes out to yuo and your boys. Homer played softball for my husband out at pacesetter. What a joy to watch on the field. He was so full of life and energy. Some one to always joke with at the ball diamond. He never could stop talking about his family, how good of a wife you are and his boys, he was so proud of them. Derek and Dylan should be very proud of there dad, he was a wonderful husband, father, friend. Everytime I would see homer on the ball field he always had a smile. Pacesetter on sunday nights will never be the same. Our softball family will never be the same.
Our prayers go out to the Shields Family. You will be forever in out hearts.

I was at Kings island on Saturday with my family. We were not at that ride but near the area where the park ambulance met the paramedics. We did not know what happened but were very concerned for the grave situation. While at the park that afternoon we each prayed silently for this man we did not know. We will continue to keep your family in our prayers. A fun family outing turned tragic. God Bless You and give you strength.

We were shocked to hear about Homer. We were recently talking about him and how Brad had so much fun playing ball with Homer. He made a big impact with Brad and I just during the few years we were around him at the softball field. We had and always will have great respect for him because of the man he was. It was obvious he loved his family a great deal and always treated everyone around him with such respect. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was a friend of Homer at Spring Arbor and he was such a great guy...always ready with a laugh and joke! He was positive and I enjoyed watching him play baseball! I just recently reconnected with him on Facebook and it was so awesome to hear what was going on in his life. He was so proud of you, Tina, and the boys.

Boys, you made your daddy so proud. He told me how you each loved sports (and you are really awesome too!) But he was so proud of what great young men are becoming! Hold on to Jesus!

Tina,

Words cannot express the shock and sadness associated with the news of Homer's passing. Time will pass, the pain will ease, but the void will remain forever.
Fortunately I have many fond memories of Homer. I knew, long before you were Homer and Tina, that he would be a good husband and father. My oldest son played high school baseball and he had a game at Erie Mason (Homer's alma-mater). Homer came to the game and instantly bacame a friend to my son. From hitting and fielding instructions, to card shows, Homer spent time with my sons. I can only imagine how hard it will be for your sons to go on without their dad.
You are in my thoughts, none of us will ever forget.

I think I can say with confidence that anyone who knew Homer and played ball either with or against him liked and respected him. He was a tough competitor, a very good ballpayer and an exceptional team mate. He was a guy that made playing ball more fun just because he enjoyed it so much. Years ago when we were playing Fed baseball he and I had a short conversation after a game about what it was to be a "ballplayer": how you act and how you play the game with respect and enjoy it at the same time. I didn't know him that well at the time but it stuck with me for some reason. Now years later after playing several years of softball with him and knowing him personally I know he was just that. A ballplayer.
More importantly, his devotion to his family (particularly his boys) speaks to what kind of man he was.

To Tina,Jimmy and family: please know that although everyone who was lucky enough to call him a friend or a team mate is blown away by this ...you are first in our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers.

I did not know Homer, but I am deeply saddened by what has happened. My boyfriend and a couple of our friends were at Kings Island the same day and had just walked off the same ride, one coaster before the one he rode. We were simply onlookers in the chaos and we are deeply saddened for your loss. We realize we must have been just a little bit ahead of him in line. I wanted to express our sorrow and offer our condolences, for it sounds like he was an amazing man, in every way! God bless your family and please know that all of our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Tina, I'm so sorry about what happened to Homer. He was and is a great man. It's so hard to believe that it happened so quick. I'll miss goin and watching him play ball and his goofy randomness. If you or the boys need anything let me and Ryan know. We are here for you guys. We love you guys so much. Tell the boys if they need anything we're here for them. Our thoughts and prayers our with you. Oh, also, if the boys just miss there dad and need someone to talk to about it, they can talk to ryan. He just lost his dad a little over a year ago. Yes, he's older, but he knows what they're going through and how they feel. God Bless you and the boys.
