Lana Shryock Obituary

Lana Sue (Monger) Shryock

Lana Sue (Monger) Shryock of Sylvania, Ohio died on December 25, 2022 in Phoenix, Arizona. She was 67 years old.

Lana was born in Harrison, Arkansas on August 7, 1955 to Hugh Lyle Monger and Lucy (Norris) Monger. She married Paul Wilson Shryock on May 27, 1978.

Raised in Mountain Home, Arkansas, Lana graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in education and earned her Master of Business Administration in 1992 from the University of Toledo in Ohio. Lana was a professor of Computer Information Systems at Jackson State Community College in Tennessee, the University of Toledo, and for 22 years at Monroe County Community College in Michigan. She had a passion for teaching and improving the lives of her students. It was her life's work.

While she was an accomplished professional, to really know Lana was to be with her. Her warmth was palpable, her laugh would fill the room, and her interest in the lives of others was her essence. You could feel this during bridge games on Mondays, worship services on Sundays, or evening phone calls and conversations any day. Lana lived in Ohio for nearly 40 years but always kept her southern, Arkansan sensibility.

Lana was a talented pianist and artist with fused glass. She traveled around the world with her family and throughout the U.S. over the last decade with Paul in an old bus that brought them great joy in the aftermath of great pain. Ever the optimist, Lana believed the best days were the ones she was living at the time. Some of that was Lana's faith in Jesus' plan for her. But much of it was simply who she was and what she was -- a loving partner to Paul; an advocate for, supporter of, and believer in, her kids; a caring sister and daughter; a prideful grandmother; and a remarkable friend. Lana lived a full, albeit shorter, life. Many were fortunate to come across her path. And the ones who loved her will miss her terribly.

Lana is survived by her husband of 44 years, Paul Shryock; her two sons and their wives, Christopher and Shannon Shryock, William and Rhonda Shryock; and three grandchildren who she adored, Ethan Shryock, Eva Shryock, and Holden Shryock. Also surviving Lana is her mother, Lucy Monger; and her three siblings, Lyle Monger, Hugh Monger, and Lisa Lind. Lana was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Lyle Monger; and her daughter Keri Shryock.

Friends are welcome to join us at a visitation from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Reeb Funeral Home at 5712 Main St, Sylvania, OH 43560. A worship service to honor Lana will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at Westgate Chapel at 2500 Wilford Dr, Toledo, OH 43615 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Randy Fall officiating. A burial service at Toledo Memorial Park will follow.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made to YMCA Storer Camps, (Keri's Cove), 6941 Stony Lake Road, Jackson, Michigan 49201.

One of the fortunate ones to have her forever a part of my tapestry. My heart is broken at this news, but celebrating her reward and reunion. She brought light, laughter, and fun, but also compassion and empathy, and understanding to the table. Grateful, and sending sincerest condolences and hugs to her family.

I was one who had the pleasure of playing bridge with Lana-- boy did we have fun! Her laugh was so infectious and her mind was so quick! We had a blast. She was definitely one our favorite people to play with! She really was like one of our family; me, my mom and grandmother had adopted her and she loved being a part of our brood! She was so fun, full of life and faith, she will certainly be missed but we are consoled by the fact that she is with her beloved Keri and Jesus!

I had Lana and a teacher... then a coworker... then a friend. She was such a wonderful person. She was so kind to me when I lost my husband. I will miss her energy, kindness, and sense of humor. She was truly an amazing person. My life was better having know her.

Lana was the most beautiful woman, inside and out, that I ever met! Her big warm heart she shared with everyone that she crossed paths with and had a great sense of humor. A truly delightful God-filled loving human being. She will be missed! Heaven got another Angel.
When I turned 40...Lana had a blast making a commercial that she put on TV with all of the family photos she got and enjoyed the biggest laugh showing everyone my multitude of hair-do´s throughout the years. That was the hardest I ever saw her laugh. I can still hear her heartfelt laugh right now. She was a fun loving soul.
Good bye for now my friend.......

I was so very sorry to hear of Lana's passing. I worked with her at MCCC and lunched with her a few times in the past. She truly was a joy to be around. Her sense of humor was unsurpassed by any others. I will remember her with great fondness. My most heartfelt condolences to all who loved her.
