M. PELC Obituary

PELC Sister M. Roberta OSF 1917 - 2010 Sister M. Roberta Pelc died on July 28, 2010 at Rosary Care Center where she lived among her Sisters in religion for the past several years. The former Anna Pelc was born to Ignatius and Victoria Pelc on April 9, 1917 in Detroit, MI. She entered the convent on October 9, 1934 from St. John the Baptist Parish in Dearborn, MI. Sister Roberta made her first vows as a Sylvania Franciscan on August 18, 1937 and her final vows on August 18, 1940. Sister Roberta was a housekeeper, baker, cook and seamstress and a "Jill-of-all-trades" in convents and hospitals in Ohio, Michigan and Texas for a total of 67 years. Her first and last assignment was St. Hedwig's Convent in Toledo, OH. She loved her ministry to the Sisters and did have opportunities to travel with three other Sisters to Hawaii and California thanks to the generosity of a very good friend. In an interview taken in 2001, Sister Roberta was asked what she wanted to be remembered for and she replied, "My delicious coffee cakes and pies (especially impossible pie and pecan pie)! I loved to bake and enjoyed cooking for the Sisters. I also liked to sew and did a lot of sewing for the church (altar supplies and baptismal stoles) as well as mending for the Sisters. Gardening and needlework were my hobbies. I now enjoy the many activities at Rosary Care Center since my vision no longer allows me to do the things I once did for others." Sister Roberta will be missed by her Sisters in community and her family. She will be welcomed home at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2010, in a special ceremony in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at the Motherhouse of the Sylvania Franciscans. A liturgy celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010 in the Chapel. Donations and memorials may be sent to the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, OH. Arrangements made by Thomas I. Wisniewski Funeral Home, Toledo, OH.

I had the pleasure of working with Sister Roberta at St. Hedwig during the Polish Festivals in the mid 1980's. We all worked together to make Paczki's for the Festival. She was a joy to work with; truly a wonderful person - excellent baker.
