Marc Gertner Obituary

GERTNER

Marc

Marc Gertner, formerly of Toledo, passed on Saturday, February 2, 2013, in Denver, Colorado, of complications from influenza. Husband of the late Bette Gertner; father of Doug (Maggie Miller) Gertner, of Denver, Peggy (Dr. Nick) Rice, of Tucson, Arizona, and Pamela (Rafail) Glatman, of Houston, Texas; grandfather of Jordan Gertner, Abigail Glatman and Elliot Glatman.

Marc Gertner was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated Cum Laude from Harvard College, and was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of The Ohio State College of Law, where he served as Editor in Chief of the Law Journal. Mr. Gertner retired as partner from Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick in Toledo; prior to that he was partner and associate of law firms in Toledo and Rhode Island. Sometimes known to friends and colleagues as "ERISA-man," Marc was recognized nationally for his expertise in employee benefit law. He spoke on the topic over 120 times, published five books, and over 50 articles on ERISA. A rabid fan of OSU Buckeye football, Marc often joined members of the Naples, Florida, Ohio State Alumni Association for game-day events during 25 years of living, golfing, and community service in Naples. According to Jim White Jr., a law partner, "Marc was a brilliant lawyer, a great thinker and leader, a sound business man, and a close personal friend." Retired Federal Judge David A. Katz, a friend of Mr. Gertner since law school adds, "Suffice to say that he was among the most respected attorneys I - and most others - have had the privilege of knowing in these many years, and he shall be sorely missed, both as a close friend and great attorney." Marc Gertner was 80.

A Memorial Service will be held at The Temple Congregation Shomer Emunim, Friday, February 8th at 11:00 a.m. A lunch will be held just after the Memorial. Following the lunch a committal service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

Not sure what to say?

February 17, 2013

Doug, Our deepest sympathies on Marc's passing. He was my dad's favorite nephew and he was so proud of his professional accomplishments and that he followed in his Uncle Abe's footsteps at Ohio State with the Ohio State Law Journal. When he was a young boy my dad would pick him up and take him to movies and helped with his Bar Mitzva speech. Margie and I had dinner with him in Naples several times and I hooked him up with the Buckeye Sports Bulletin so he could follow his beloved Buckeyes. May he rest in peace, may he be with G-d, and may he remain in our hears and minds forever. May G-d bless. His first cousin, Michael Harvey Gertner - Abe's son, and wife Margie

Marc and I had been friends since we played ball together in Columbus as teens. It was a priviledge to work with him in our professional capacities throughout our careers. He was a fine attorney and a good friend. Doug, I know how you took care of him in his later years. My best wishes to you and your sisters.
