Paul Leiter Obituary

LEITER Bernie Paul "Bernie" Leiter, 73 years, of South Toledo passed away at home suddenly, Saturday morning, February 24, 2007, after an enjoyable evening out listening to Jazz and visiting with friends at the Toledo Club. Bernie loved Jazz, New Orleans and the Race Track. He was a 1951 graduate of Woodward High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War in Japan as a writer for the "Stars and Stripes" newspaper. Bernie graduated from the University of Toledo where he was president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He received his PhD in Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1972. Of the different things that Bernie became involved in, he enjoyed co-hosting "The Sounds of Jazz" radio show on WTOD with Chase Clements, teaching at Jones Junior High and volunteering his services with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Since the early 1970s he worked as a psychologist in the medical office of psychiatrist, Dr. Lurley Archambeau. An avid traveler, he returned yearly for the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Surviving are his daughter, Elizabeth (Thomas) Benedict of Lafayette, NJ; grandson, Daniel; sister, Lynda Nycz and by his longtime soulmate, Ann Sanford and her sons, Ford and Deuce to whom he was a father figure. He also leaves behind a significantly large network of friends. Friends may call at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 So. Reynolds Road Tuesday 2-8 p.m. and Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m. where services will take place at 4 p.m. Memorials may take the form of a contribution to the Victory Center, CASA or the Toledo Sight Center. My condolences to the family. Bernie helped me through some tough times and I always teased him about a ride in his little car. He told me if I got out of my wheelchair and walked in to see him he would. Unfortunetly, time ran out. I will miss him and think about him every day. He wasn't just a counselor but a friend also.

Ann,
We are so sorry; we are out of town, and just learned of Bernie's death. He was the consummate gentleman, and always brought a smile to our faces as we would see him walking in the neighborhood.
We too shall miss him.
Sincerely,
Pat and Tip

We've all lost a special person. Your wisdom and insight helped me through the toughest times of my life. I'll miss your smile, your laugh and the pat on the back as we departed. But most of all I miss your frienship, God speed Bernie.

Bernie taught us all the true meaning of life. He lived it to it's fullest! I feel honored to say he was my friend and yet it just doesn't seem enough. Bernie was the one to introduce my husband, myself and my children to New Orleans. I will remember him everytime I hear a jazz horn blow or a zydeco melody played and I will dance in celebration of his life.
