Paul Roesner Obituary

Paul I. Roesner

Paul Roesner, 89, of Toledo passed away Sunday, April 28, 2024, at St. Anne Hospital. A 1952 graduate of Toledo Central Catholic High School and later of Davis Business College, Paul worked at Swift Meats before serving honorably in the US Army at Fort Riley, Kansas from 1957 to 1959. Back in Toledo, he enjoyed an unusually long career as an accountant for Whitehouse Trucking, Sentle Trucking, and most recently Northern Steel Transport. He retired from Northern in 2014 at the age of 79.

Paul served as president of the Toledo chapter of the National Association of Accountants in 1976-1977. Never idle, Paul prioritized family, valued his work, enjoyed lifelong friendships with classmates and colleagues, and brought joy to any occasion. Paul met his wife Kathy through mutual friends in the Catholic Youth Organization and they were married in 1965. They loved one another through good and bad; taught their daughter to be independent and curious; and cared for aging family members with love and dignity. In her later years, Kathy suffered from Parkinson's disease and Paul became her devoted caregiver. Paul lived his faith and always saw the best in people. An avid gardener, Paul shared seedlings, flowers, and produce with friends and family. He was also dedicated to feeding the birds at his west Toledo home, which led to bonus visits from deer, pheasants, ducks, and, on one unfortunate occasion, a car full of mice. Paul took great pride in being a lifelong member of Gesu Parish. He was baptized there, attended the elementary school, served as an usher for several decades, belonged to the Bellarmine club, and attended daily mass in his retirement.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife Kathy; parents, Henry A. and Frances Marie; brothers Henry J., Joseph, and Mark; and a sister, Mary Catherine (Sr. Mary Christelle, S.N.D.). Paul is survived by his daughter, Becky (Greg Pouch, Hudson IL); a sister, Rita Ann Zito (College Park, MD), and many dear nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors at the Ansberg-West Funeral Home (3000 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo) from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2024, with a brief rosary service from 6:00-6:15 p.m. Visitors are again welcome at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2024, at Gesu Catholic Church (2049 Parkside Blvd, Toledo) to reminisce before an 11:00 a.m. funeral mass. Paul will be interred at Resurrection Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Lisa Getzen and the many other helpers, healthcare providers, and well-wishers who supported Paul during his recent health struggles. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Gesu Catholic Church or the National Audubon Society.
