Richard Cubbon Obituary

CUBBON
Richard Frank 10/21/1958 - 10/30/2016
Richard Frank Cubbon, beloved son, brother, and everyone's favorite uncle died unexpectedly in his home October 30, 2016.
Richard was born in Toledo to Barbara D. and Frank W. Cubbon Jr., the sixth of nine children. He attended Dorr Elementary School, Maumee Valley Country Day School, Springfield High School and Ohio University. He worked over the years in many occupations but he most enjoyed time in the outdoors—fishing, swimming, building bonfires and driving his truck. He had a heart of gold and had friends in every walk of life.
More than anything, though, Rich loved his family. He took great pride in the accomplishments of others, particularly his many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He curried their favor by roughhousing with the little ones and tempted everyone with his incomparable homemade peanut butter candy.
In early 2015 Rich was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, which sapped his great strength but he struggled on and kept as active as a person trailing oxygen canisters could possibly be, even figuring how to go swimming while using oxygen! On July 31, 2016, he received the incredible gift of a double lung transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. He endured the difficult recovery and enjoyed many “best days of his life” after that, but ultimately his body gave out. Difficult as his illness was, he enjoyed extra closeness from his family during this time and his battle with IPF truly united his family.
Richard is survived by his parents, Barbara and Frank Cubbon; siblings, Frank (Pamela) Cubbon, Kay (Thomas) McArdle, Kyle (Spiros Cocoves) Cubbon, Stuart (Denise) Cubbon, Barbara (Eric) Beale, Amy (Mark) Bliton and Thomas Cubbon, as well as 19 nieces and nephews and 8 great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank W. and Eunice V. Cubbon and Albert and Catherine Davies; his brother, William F. Cubbon and niece, Katie Cubbon.
The family extends its sincere thanks to the tremendous staff of the Cleveland Clinic Transplant Center as well as all of medical providers in Toledo who aided Richard before and after his transplant, of his friends about Toledo, and especially members and staff of The St. James Club.
The Celebration of Life for Richard will take place Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at The Secor Room in Secor Park, 10001 W. Central Ave., Berkey, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor's choice. Please view and sign the online guest registry at
