Richard Duryea Obituary

DURYEA

Richard Dale

Richard Dale Duryea, age 66, of Toledo, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Friday January 10, 2014, in the home he had lived in all of his life. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 22, 1947, to Dale and Margaret (Kardos) Duryea. He was a 1965 graduate of Libbey High School. He obtained an associate's degree in business from Davis Business College, and later attended The University of Toledo.

Dick's true passion in life was music. He began piano lessons at a very young age. He turned this passion into a career working for Catholic Diocese as an organist. He was the organist and choir director at St. Agnes Parish for over twenty years until its closure in 2005. He also served as the school librarian. He played the organ part-time at Gesu Parish and played for weddings and funerals all over Toledo. He currently worked for Toledo Public Schools in food service at Beverly and formerly at Bowsher.

Dick was a lifelong member of St. Charles Borromeo Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, usher, and lector. He led the rosary on Sundays and was a member of the choir. He was a member of Cursillo since 1999. He had currently served as the Assistant Rector of School Leaders and was slated to take over as Rector in July. He was also involved in prison ministry and Christ Renews His Parish. He had a very deep faith and was devout in prayer life, waking every morning at 5 a.m. to say the rosary and pray.

Dick was the family historian and kept the family history chronologically in order by his skills of scrap booking and created the Diamond Press Review from 1966 to 2006. He was also a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines.

Dick will always be remembered for his famous Sunday dinners, which he took over after his mother's death. He also loved to bake and was known for baking over a thousand Christmas cookies each year to pass out to family and friends. Every year at Easter he also made delicious lamb cakes and delivered them to churches and family. He never forgot a birthday or an anniversary. And although he had little, he was always charitable and giving.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers-in-law, Henry DeCant and Charles Powers. He is survived by his sisters, Sharon DeCant and Denise (Mark) Damazyn; loving and dear friend, Theresa McPherran; 13 nieces and nephews, and many more great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S Reynolds Rd; on Friday, January 17, 2014, from 2:00-8:00 p.m. where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the mortuary on Saturday, January 18, at 11:30 a.m., followed by the funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.

Contributions may take the form of donations to either St. Charles Borromeo Church or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Please view and sign the online guest registry at

Dick was always involved at St. Charles, and generous in every way that was possible for him. Above all I could count him as a true friend, especially after he got involved in Cursillo. After I left St. Charles, I always looked forward to his lengthy Christmas letter. May he be at peace in God's Kingdom.

I remember 'Dicky' from my childhood. His family were neighbors to my Grandmother, Owenetta Shutt, where we spent many summer days. He was always kind to all of us kids, and although I haven't seen him in 40+ years, I've never forgotten him. Reading about what a wonderful man he was, I know there was an empty place waiting for him in Heaven that has just been filled. My sympathies to his family for your loss, but, happy for him, that he is home.
