Roy Shaw "Rock" Hudson

Roy Hudson Obituary

HUDSON Roy "Rock" Shaw The Measure of a Man Roy "Rock" Shaw Hudson was born on July 21, 1935, in Dyersburg, TN to Odell and Betty Hudson, the youngest boy of ten children. He moved to Milwaukee, WI at the age of 15 and attended Lincoln High School. He was a Golden Gloves Boxer with the Joe Gants Gym. He then joined the R.O.T.C. and attended Wilberforce University, where he played football and baseball. Upon receiving his bachelors of science in chemistry, Roy went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. He co-founded and was Chairman of the Board of Harambe, a non-profit organization that served the community through encouraging children's literacy. Harambe was the first non-profit Black organization to facilitate the traditional Corn Roasts on the Milwaukee Summerfest Grounds. Roy was honored for his commitment with the naming of the Roy S. Hudson Library at the Harambe Elementary School. Beginning a lifelong management career in the automotive industry, Roy served over 40 years at American Motors Corp/ Chrysler Jeep. He later transferred to Toledo Jeep in 1978. In Toledo, he continued an active dedication to youth through mentoring at Glenwood Elementary School, assisting with GED preparation, and the generous donation of his time and resources to numerous charitable organizations. He was a faithful member of Rosary Cathedral Church. But his greatest passion in life was his family. Roy was the patriarch of the Hudson-Smith-Lillard Family. Roy's greatest joys were his grandchildren, which he affectionately referred to as his babies. Never missing a game or a school function, if Papa wasn't with Peyton, Evan, Chaise or Paige, he was talking about them. On August 9, 2007, Roy's homecoming reunited him with his parents, all of his brothers and sisters and special cousins in Heaven. He leaves to celebrate his memory his devoted children, Bruce Hudson (Sharon), Shawn Marie Hudson-Brown (Romie), Joseph Hudson and Crystal Hudson; his adoring grand-children, Jason, Aaron, Marcell, Mattii, Peyton, Evan, Chaise, Paige, Erica, Andre, Jeremy and Ricky; those who shared his life, Veronica Bachmann and Willie Ann Hudson; numerous special nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends. With a sparkle in his eye and that smile you couldn't forget, Roy touched the lives of everyone, instantly making them family. Nicknamed "Rock", Roy was devoted to serving God, family, friends and his community with a selfless spirit. They say the Measure of a Man is revealed by the way he lives his life...Roy, Rock, Dad, Pops, Uncle Roy, Papa...will inspire and unite our family for generations to come. Friends may visit the family on Friday from 2-9 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.). Funeral services will begin on Saturday at the funeral home with prayers at 9:15 a.m. followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Hudson-Smith-Lillard Youth Scholarship Fund. Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Nothing I can say will ease the hurt you feel right now, but in time it will become easier to bear. Please take comfort in knowing that your father is no longer in pain. He was strong, intelligent, and he provided you with all he could. You'll only remember the good times and the love. Veda Ervin
