Dad~ you are so missed every day even though you'll always be with me. You were my hero, just like John Wayne, I looked up to you, wanted to be just like you & always have & always will love you with all my heart.
Now your riding tall in the saddle, up in the sky,
looking out for the girls & I.
I'll tell the girls stories, of you in the past,
& promice on everything your memory will last.
A hunter, a fisher, a guard at the prison...
the cowboy & DI & oh how we'll miss him.
A drinker & partier, & such a good friend...
A great dad & Grandpa right down to the end.
Now knock knock knock up on Heaven's door,
I know we'll find peace though our hearts still sore.
"Daddy's girl forever", this I'll always be...
We'll love you always ~ the girls & me.
I made sure you had your cowboy boots & your hat, so saddle up Banner & ride off in the sunset. We love you so much, ~Alicia, Jasmine, Mallory, Allison, & Jasmine

Carolyn (and Family),
You have never been far from my thoughts as I returned home to Jackson due to family illness and for visits. I always looked forward to getting together again for our mini-reunions, and apologize that I wasn't there to maybe help in some small way during this difficult journey. I was truly sadened to learn of your husband's passing. I wish I was able to be in town to give you a hug at the Roadhouse. As I recall that is where you met Steve. May God Bless you all at this sad time. Cyndi (Wilson) Hoffman

"Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway." --John Wayne (1907-1979). Steve always 'saddled up' and went in fighting. I can see him and "The Duke" getting acquainted right about now. Know this: He loved us and we loved him. We'll miss him forever.

A NOTICE TO ALL WHO VIEW THIS SITE:
There was a typo in the printing of the obituary printed Tuesday the 8th of May...The wake is indeed being held at the Roadhouse (located on Lansing Avenue, Jackson) but it will begin at 1:00PM NOT 2:00PM and will end at 4:00PM. If you have any questions, please contact me (I'm Steve's youngest daughter) 517-782-2831. Thank you all, and we hope to see many faces we haven't seen in a while (yet haven't forgotten).

Steve was a fine gentleman and will surely be missed by everyone who knew him. I also retired from the Corrections Department in 2002 and worked with Steve for a short time until his transfer to the Boot Camp. My deepest sympathy goes out to his entire family. He's now in a better place..

"Stevie" -- Please accept my most heartfelt apologies for omitting you and Katie (Steve's son, Steven James Barber and daughter-in-law Katie of Tucson AZ) from the obituary in the Cit Pat. We most certainly want to acknowledge your loss of your father and know that you shared loving memories of him just as we did. We will all miss him and will always ask ourselves why, but he is at peace now and pain free. May we all be reunited on that final Judgement Day.

Steve will always be remembered by my family - Mack, Ryan and Kenny - and their dad, as well as myself. The various places we visited - Kingsley, MI; Erie, MI; Higgins Lake, Tequahmenon Falls, "Canada" :) and even when he came with Carolyn & girls to Dallas. We're sad to see him departed from this life and offer loving support to the family - now and always.

Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself; "I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to to be happy in it."
