Terry Goodman Obituary

GOODMAN

Dr. Terry B., OD

Dr. Terry B. Goodman, OD of Bedford died peacefully on November 20, 2014. Born in Boston, MA, to the late Myer and Ruth Goodman in 1949. He was a graduate of the very first class from Derryfield High School, and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1972, Phi Beta Kappa. After a two year hiatus to Toledo, Ohio where he worked as a musician playing the drums, and also met his future wife, Hilda "Elda" Cordero, Terry returned to New England and earned his Doctorate of Optometry in 1978 from the New England College of Optometry in Boston.

Terry began his optometric practice in Milford, NH. After thirteen years, he met with Dr. David Bellows and with only a handshake, joined him to begin the Bellows, Goodman, Shaker, Siegal Medical Eye Center in Manchester. Recently retired, he was recognized by his practice this month for over 36 years of eye care service to the community.

Terry followed his father's footsteps in community service and joined the Milford Lions Club in 1978. He was a longtime member of the Milford Lions Club. Terry was also known as a national speaker for Lions Club International, and held many offices including Past District Governor, and Past Council Chair.

For 27 years Terry created and organized high-quality charity haunted houses for Lions Club, including the Lions statewide haunted house at Camp Allen in Bedford for many years, then NH Plaza on Elm St. in Manchester and finally at the Fisher Cats stadium in Manchester. His "haunts" raised over $150,000.00 for the NH Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation over the years. For the past four years he also contributed his talents to the PTA Hollis Haunted House, including entertaining the queue line as his signature character "Wendell," the beloved, helpful, wisecracking, crazy nitwit who frightened and delighted the waiting patrons. Terry recently donated his considerable collection of haunting props to the charitable Haunted Overload in Lee, NH, voted one of the top ten haunted attractions in the country.

He was the "Grand Poobah" of charity haunting in New Hampshire, and he will be deeply missed by generations of haunters and patrons alike.

For decades Terry has been a familiar patron at the landmark "Red Arrow Diner" in Manchester and Milford, and has a sandwich named after him, the "Doc Goodman"

Terry is survived by his loving wife of over 41 years, Elda "Hilda" Cordero-Goodman; his daughter, Aleeza; a brother, Malcolm Goodman and his wife Paula; a niece, Rachel Goodman and her husband Robert Duffey, and a grandnephew, Max Duffey.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at Temple Adath Yeshurun, 152 Prospect Street, Manchester, NH, 03104, followed by burial at the Manchester Hebrew Cemetery. The family will be sitting Shiva at Temple Adath Yeshurun on Sunday, November 23, from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m., on Monday, November 24, from 2:00-4:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, November 25, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Terry's memory to Lions Club International, lcif.org, or Temple Adath Yeshurun-Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, or Milford Lions Club Scholarship Fund, 21 Mooreland Street, Milford, NH, 03055. Please visit

For years, Terry brought generosity of spirit, his professionalism, and welcomed humor to countless clients, patrons, and friends in New Hampshire and around the world. One of his favorite quotes was from a tombstone in the "cemetery" in the queue line of the Haunted Mansion attraction in Disney World: "Master Gracey, Laid To Rest - No Mourning Please At His Request - Farewell." Farewell indeed to a devoted husband, father, haunter, and friend who will be long remembered.

I had the pleasure of knowing Terry in high school and being amazed and envious of his band...The Madmen. I fondly remember him as a free spirited person who you just loved to be around. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family....he will be missed but not forgotten.

Terry was a great guy - admired by many. I enjoyed knowing him in high school, and many years later gained a new appreciation for him - he was the only optometrist I could tolerate doing a glaucoma exam (sensitive eyes). I went years without a glaucoma test, yet he was the one doc who got me to do it. Plus we had a lot of fun chatting about our high school days. Thanks, Terry.

What an amazing service I attended for you today Dr. Goodman. Learnt things about you I never knew. But, the one thing I have known since the first day I came to work for Bellows, Goodman and Shaker Medical eye center is that you were truly a very good caring Man. The crowd in that service today and all of the wonderful tributes to you and the life you lived was heartwarming in inpirational. Rest in peace Dr. Goodman and I hope that there is a ton of Lindt chocolate in heaven for you. You will forever be in my heart as one of the good guys with a beautiful heart. Gloria Bolduc

Terry as "Wendell" at the Hollis Haunted House on Oct. 18, 2014

Randy Forgaard

November 22, 2014

Terry, you were a beloved and important member of our Hollis Haunted House family for the past 4 years, both as the creator of terrific and terrifying scenes, and for frightening and entertaining our queue line as "Wendell." Though you won't be appearing any more in person, you will live on in "spirit" in our hearts and in our haunts always.

You and I shared a love of all things Disney, and in particular the Haunted Mansion attraction at Walt Disney World. As you and I know, there are "999 ghosts that resideā€ there - and in my mind, I imagine that you'll make it an even 1000.

Farewell, my friend. You have touched many lives with your skill, your grace, and most of all your humor. I will miss you so very much!

I first encountered Terry about four decades ago when all the boys of my age were very envious of the MADMEN and the hearse they drove around in. Over the ensuing years I ran into Terry with some frequency, whether at elections or at the Lions Pancake Annual Fundraiser. In reading the messages posted here I can only agree with all that has been said....I would only offer as an addition that Terry was a true gentleman in the old sense of the word.
He will be missed by so many and my heartfelt sympathies to the family.

My thoughts and prayers for Dr. Goodman's family and friends. My children and I were patients of his when he had his practice in Milford. I will always remember him showing me under the blue light my daughters paper cut on her eye. Super nice man and extremely caring Dr. Loved seeing him at the penny sale, train show and sometimes in the Milford Labor Day parade with his fellow Lions

I have known Terry in many capacities, as His daughter's bus driver, as an admirer to his spirit in giving at the Bedford Mall wrapping presents to raise money with Elda and as an eye patient. In every way Terry showed the best side of humanity. He will be greatly missed

November 22, 2014

Terry and I went to the same grammar school...he was spirited, and fun. My family became his patients when he started his practice with Dr. Bellows. As Temple members, we always enjoyed a word with Terry...he even allowed me to try his Segway and displayed patience and good humor. May his memory always be blessed. My condolences in your great loss, Elda, and Aleeza and Family.
