Victor Ramirez Obituary

Victor Ramirez

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Victor "Shorty" Ramirez, who departed from this world on May 28, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on March 23, 1931, Victor was a beloved son of Martin and Gregoria Ramirez, sibling to Lupita Andaverde, Remigio Ramirez, Rudy Ramirez, Mela Garcia, and Ninfa Orosco, whose warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

Victor lived a life full of generosity and purpose. At the tender age of 5 years old Victor entered the cotton fields of Southern Texas and began a life of labor for his family. Born in Edcouch, Texas, he migrated to Williston, Ohio, in 1948, in search of a better life and opportunity at the age of 17. One and a half years later, in 1950, he started his new opportunity with Norfolk and Southern Railroad, retiring 43 years later. It is in the dash between 1948 (dash) 2025 that tells his incredible story. He met the love of his life in a 4-second glance into the back of Carmen (Mom) dad's brand-new shiny red truck while on break cleaning rail-road switches on Consaul Street, near Coy Rd., in Oregon. These 4 seconds would change his life for the next 70 years for the better in ways he never dreamed of (his words.)

Victor could also be found with his whole family on Sunday mornings at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church (Spanish Mass) where he served with a smile as usher, festivals, and cooking meals side by side with mom for over 55 years that were considered legendary. They were the 10 percenters that ran the behind-the-scenes stuff. Victor was equally proud of being one of the original 9 members who attended the first meeting in 1967 following the legendary Baldemar Velasquez in forming the Farm Labor Organizing Committee known as FLOC. The day before dad passed in his sleep, he called his sons to remind them of Tuesday night's meeting FLOC was having. He walked the walk of a proud union man.

Victor cherished his family above all. He is survived by his children, daughter, Hilda (Patrick) Martin; sons, Hector, Earl, Martin (Missy), Jerry (Michelle), and Emilio (Sarah); Honorable Mention, Renee; grandchildren, Tiffany, Xavier, Marie, Dominic, Austin, Marissa, Larissa, Aubrey, Aleah, Alyse, Mario, Christian, Melinda, Olivia; great-grandchildren, 6.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Gregoria Ramirez; wife of 64 years, Carmen (Lopez) Ramirez; sister, Lupita Andaverde; brother, Rudy Ramirez.

The entire family would like to send our love and appreciation out to Ohio Living Swan Creek family. We entrusted our beloved parents to your care, and you over delivered with love and compassion! We give you all 6 stars out of 5!

The family will receive friends at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., Oregon, Ohio 43616, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., with prayer services at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 6, 2025, at SS. Peter and Paul, 738 S. St. Clair St., Toledo, Ohio 43609, where the family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

All who know and love Victor are welcome to come and honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to SS. Peter & Paul Parish or FLOC in Victor's name.

Apa will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will live on in the many, many, many stories he shared, the laughter remembered, and the love he gave so freely.

May he rest in eternal peace with the love of his lifetime, Carmen.

Faithful, loyal to a cause beyond himself, his historic friendship and support of FLOC was unmatched because he had a heart for others. We will miss his constant encouragement and presence. Victor Ramirez, Presente!
