William Freitag Obituary

William C. "Bill" Freitag

William Cruden Freitag of Maumee, age 85, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024, at Ohio Living Swan Creek.

He was born in Chicago, IL, to Ralph and Ruth Freitag. He shared many childhood memories with his sister, Beth, and later, his stepbrother, Chuck.

He was a graduate of Fenger High School in 1958. He continued his education by earning a BS at Valparaiso University, where he also met the love of his life, Gayle, and got married in 1963. They moved to Maumee, OH, and Bill got a job as a speech pathologist for Sylvania City Schools. He furthered his education by earning his MA at BGSU and later, postgraduate work at UT. His commitment to education led him to active involvement with the NW Ohio Speech and Hearing Association, where he took on many distinguished roles, particularly as the director of the department of special education for Sylvania Schools, before retiring in 1998.

Bill enjoyed volunteering. He was a park ranger at the Metroparks. He also volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital, and the public libraries, (specifically his involvement with the Maumee Library's Children's Garden), and he was an active member in his church at Trinity Lutheran. In addition to his professional accomplishments and service to others, Bill found the most joy in spending time with family and friends. Whether it was vacationing, golfing, playing poker, (solving the world's problems), or simply going out to eat, he treasured every single moment spent with his loved ones.

He will be dearly missed as a devoted husband of 60 years to Gayle; as a loving father to his children, Karen (Jerry) Francis, Kristy (Phil) Snyder, and Chad Freitag; and as a doting grandfather to his granddaughters, Riley, and Hope Snyder.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his stepmother, Leona Freitag; and his grandson, Tyler William Snyder.

Bill leaves behind a foundation of love, faith, and humor that will be remembered by all who knew and cherished him.

The visitation will be held at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 Reynolds Rd, on Friday, February 16, from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4560 Glendale Ave., on Saturday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

Memorial contributions in Bill's name may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Swan Creek Metropark. Please view Bill's video tribute and leave a condolence message for the family at CoyleFuneralHome.com.

Mr Freitag was a wonderful person who helped me with my speech. When I was young in the 70s he was my speech teacher at whiteford elementary. He helped me with my Rs . One day my parents came to school to have a meeting with Mr Freitag to show how I was doing better. He asked me to say Rabbit and I started saying RRRR AND OUT CAME RRRR BUNNY instead . My parent and I always laugh because it was so funny. On a serious note Mr Freitag will always be remembered. He was kind, patient. Understanding and was very special to me. He is the reason how I can communicate with others. I will always be so grateful that he come into my life. I am so sorry to hear about his passing. He touched my life on a way that makes me so blessed to have known him. Thank you Mr Freitag for helping me and I am sure you have helped thousands more. May you rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time. Thank you for sharing your husband dad and grandfather with me because he was a wonderful person. I haven't seen him in years but his help was a huge impacted in my life. Always helping and caring for others. That is his legacy he is leaving by behind. Everyone who knew him was blessed and grateful. May
G-d watch over his family.

I was very fortunate to work with Bill from 1992 up until his retirement in 1998. I was a graduate student at the University of Toledo. I was going back to school to get my certification in special education after teaching 4 years in a regular classroom outside of Sylvania. Bill was looking for a grad student in special education to work as an intern as he began to implement inclusion of children with special needs into their home schools and regular classrooms. I worked as an intern for 2 years and in 1994 Bill was instrumental in getting me a full-time position in Sylvania Schools as a special education teacher. I really looked up to him. I could go to him with any question or just for advice. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I am still teaching in Sylvania Schools and often think of the positive impact he had on my early career. Sending healing prayers to his family.

As the principal of Maplewood Elementary School. Bill and I worked with many students. His professionalism was always evident. Always a positive attitude, always looking at the best for the children. My job was enhanced by working with him. May he rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing.

Mr. Freitag was such a kind man! He was my speech therapist for two years(1972-74) and really helped me with my self esteem, as well. I felt my first grade teacher thought I was a burden and the kids made fun of me. He turned it around also helped me with undiagnosed adhd and dyslexia. Without his hints on writing and assistance with an organizational system, I would have never made it through school, college, or a career. I still use some of the tools he gave me today. He checked in on me as the years progressed even though I was no longer one of his students. A truly dedicated man!
