Mary Kathleen (Kay) (Mittereder) Slater, 95, recently of Falmouth, MA, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, in the Royal Falmouth Nursing Center, where she had resided for the past 1.25 years. She was the wife of the late Robert G. Slater, the love of her life. He died April 21, 1983. Kay and Bob had ten wonderful children. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on May 31, 1929, Kay was the twin daughter of the late Aloysius L. Mittereder and Anna Marie Barbara Hufnagel. Her twin, Betty Anne Hamilton, died in 2019. Kay was a lifelong learner, and in the 1970s, while her kids were still in school, she decided to go back to school. After many years of night school and community college, where she earned an A.S. in Medical Technician, she graduated from Point Park College with a BS in Health Services in 1980. Kay was very involved in her community and it seems that she would join a committee and then end up running the show. She was especially active in the mayor's Human Relations Committee, Girl Scouts, NAMI, SWORD, and others. In 2001 she built a log cabin in Seigel, PA, designed by her son Mike and built with the help of her children. It was fun to see her up on a ladder, actively involved in every aspect of the building. Kay was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; one son, Kevin; a granddaughter, Catherine Veronica Slater; her parents; and all of her siblings, Ollie Mittereder, Betty Anne Hamilton, Fran Mittereder, Joan Barclay, and Conn Mittereder. Survivors include her children, Robert Slater (Rosemary Savarese) of John's Creek, GA, Maureen Bausemer (Harold) of Braintree, MA, Michael Slater (Dang Phookobthong) of Seigel, PA, Dennis Slater (Linda Chilko) of Allegheny Township, PA, Mary Ellen Slater of Mashpee, MA, Kathleen Hall (Gerry) of New Kensington, PA, Martin Slater of Newport Beach, CA, Patti McCloud of Pittsburgh, PA, and John Slater of Charlotte, NC; and her daughter-in-law, Anita (Turano) Slater, Mars, PA. She also has 22 grandchildren, Kristin, Eric, Ashley, Katie, Jessica, Erwin, Regina, Jake, Jocelyn, Zachary, Jay, Sarah, Michelle, Alex Nicholas, Christopher, Jordan, Nicole, Cassidy, Julia, and Ava; and ten great-grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren very much and spent as much time with them as she could, especially when they were newborns. Family and friends will be received from 4 until 7 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 13, in the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, INC., Robert P. Karish, Supervisor, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, (724)-335-6500. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 1125 Leishman Ave., New Kensington. Burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
