J.C. Stroble Obituary

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — J.C. Stroble, known as the "call-it" man at Spartanburg's famed Beacon Drive-In restaurant, has died at age 71.

Co-owner Sam Maw says Stroble died Monday after a fall at his home earlier this month.

Stroble had worked at the Beacon for almost 58 years, taking customers' orders and yelling instructions to the cooks.

Part of a street near the Beacon was named for Stroble in 2011. Diagnosed with glaucoma decades ago, a foundation also bears his name.

Funeral arrangements for Stroble have not been announced.

"One of the unique things about him is that J.C. was never awe-struck by anybody. He treated everybody the same whether it was a president, governor, senator or a regular customer," said Kenneth Church, who had bought the restaurant 15 years ago.

The Beacon is famous for its sweet iced tea and "a-plenty" plates that feature sandwiches topped with french fries and onion rings. It has become a popular stop for candidates in the months leading up to South Carolina's presidential primaries.

As a former cruiser at the Beacon in the late sixties and early seventies, I would like to add my deepest sympathy. Along with being a celebrity at the Beacon, he was a member of the Lions Club and started his own Glaucoma foundation. I find this most memorable as I have a younger brother who has glaucoma and I am getting regular checkups from surgery for a detached retina. I am planning to see him again someday with a cleared vision.

Call It!!

In Honor of J.C. Stroble, a Spartanburg, SC Legend

two simple words
from a man
with a complicated life...
a man who
never let anything
stand in his way...
who met a daily challenge
with
love in his heart
and a smile on his face

legally blind yet
he saw
a beauty in the world around him
that most of us
take
for granted...

to see him
was to
see the strength of God
to see that
no matter what you go through
He can and will
make things possible
if only you believe

today
I honor your life
I applaud your
perseverance
and I
pray for your family
knowing that
not only will they miss you
but so will
the rest of the world that smiled
every time
we heard you
say those two words...

Call It!!!

Love, thoughts and prayers are going out to the Stroble family.

R.I.P. J.C.
