LLOYD MYHRE Obituary

LLOYD ALLEN MYHRE Forever Loved Cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Lloyd Myhre died at his home September 4, 2011 at age 84 following a three year prior diagnosis of renal cell cancer. Lloyd was born May 2, 1927 in Tacoma, Washington to Jeanette and Carl Myhre. He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son, Marc. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce; his brother, Glenn Myhre (Kathleen); his son, Christopher (Suzanne); two daughters, Wendy Steiger (Raymond) and Jill Hassing (Geoffrey); eight grandchildren, Andrew, Nicolle, and Jay Steiger, Pierce and Elise Myhre, Morgan Harper, Katelyn and Bowen Hassing; stepchildren, Ben Shephard (Lisa) and Sara Ribben (Andy); step great grandchildren, Brooklyn Shephard and Owen Ribben. Lloyd graduated from Stadium High School in 1947 and attended both UPS and Washington State Universities. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 - 1954. In May, 1953 he returned to Seattle from the Korean War along with over 4,300 service men and women in three troop ships. He was greeted by his fiancée, Joyce, and a month later on June 22, they began 58 years of marriage. Two weeks later they started a northern route drive across the U.S. to their first home in Fairmont, West Virginia where Lloyd completed his remaining year of service and Joyce taught 4th grade in Fairmont schools. In June 1954, Lloyd and Joyce drove the southern route back to Washington. Gas was 26 cents a gallon! Following his return to Tacoma, Lloyd was employed by the Boeing Company for 36 years. The couple lived with their three children in Tacoma until 1979 when they moved to Gig Harbor. In retirement they were able to continue their love of travel, visiting many countries in Europe and Asia. They also enjoyed yearly visits to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Lloyd was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor, and the Gig Harbor Golf Club. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his loyalty, dependability, punctuality, his subtle sense of humor, and the love he continuously shared with his wife, his children and grandchildren. Over many years, Lloyd enjoyed camping, fishing, golf, and holiday gatherings with his family. The family wishes to thank Franciscan Hospice Services and Advanced Home Care for the loving care they gave Lloyd in recent weeks, Chapel Hill friends and deacons for their prayers, our wonderful Richmond Beach neighbors, Gig Harbor Fire Services, and Lloyd's loyal golf club buddies. A family burial service with military honors will be held at New Tacoma Cemetery Saturday, September 10 at 11am. Please join us at 2pm for a Celebration of Life Service at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor with the Reverend James Mead officiating. Remembrances may be made to Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church or Franciscan Hospice. Please visit our online guestbook at www.newtacoma.com.
