MARIANNE BRUNE Obituary

Marianne (Guss) Brune Passed away in her Tacoma home on June 5th, 2018 at the age of 91. She is survived by Hans Brune, her loving husband of 33 years. Marianne leaves behind five sons from her first marriage, Matthew, Stuart, Peter, Jonathan, and Gavin Guss, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. From her second marriage to Hans, she leaves behind three step-sons, Erik, Alan, and Mark Brune, and three grandchildren. Marianne was born in Philadelphia on May 15th, 1927 to Samuel and Margaret Gailey. After graduating from Penn State, she met her first husband, Leonard Guss, with whom she started a family, eventually moving to Tacoma in 1961. In the late Seventies, Marianne served as the Executive Secretary of the Northwest Family Training Institute, where for nearly a decade she organized workshops that brought many eminent psychologists to the Seattle area. It was through her work that she met and married her second husband, Hans. Marianne's personality, gregariousness, and sense of humor filled up her house. She had the gift of gab, spent hours on the phone, made friends on airplanes, and cackled whenever something struck her as funny (which was often). Marianne was always passionate about people; meeting them, talking to them, trying to see what made them tick. She firmly believed everyone had an interesting story if you bothered to ask. The worldwide travel she shared with Hans offered many opportunities to indulge this passion; so did a trip to the local supermarket. But the thing that gave Marianne her greatest pleasure was her family; she was a devoted spouse, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. And for her, as for all her family and friends, the house she lived in played a special role. Marianne loved her North Tacoma home of 56 years, and devoted a lot of thought and creativity to landscaping, remodeling and decorating it with her own special flair. Her house was always a warm and welcoming place, with frequent gatherings and many guests. We will always remember Marianne for the love she so freely gave, and count ourselves lucky to have had her in our lives for so long. A celebration of Marianne's life will be planned by the family for later this summer.

I just learned of her passing - and am compelled to leave a note of gratitude for having known this amazing lady. I was her picture framer and so enjoyed her warm conversations full of wit and humor. She was just so much fun and interesting to chat with. I loved seeing her in her beautiful home- such a reflection of her charm and complexity. Thank you for your kindness Marianne. Rest In Peace.

I like to think that Aunt Marianne and I shared a unique and special bond. I can trace it back to the winter of 1971 when I was a young man of 21 and a senior in college. Marianne and I spent an evening talking together in front of the fireplace at 619, her castle, talking until 3 in the morning. It was the beginning of a friendship that spanned almost 50 years. Despite our geographical distance, living on opposite coasts, and the infrequency of our visits, every subsequent conversation was filled with love, immediacy, and laughter. More than anyone I have ever known, Marianne's gift of her ability to make instant friends, cut through superficiality and get to the core of whatever the subject of conversation made her the loveable, respectworthy and unique character that brought a soecial light into the lives of whomever she touched. I will miss Marianne but take some comfort in feeling richer for having been her nephew.
