October 28, 2011

Stephen and Diane,

Your son Mike will always have a place in our hearts. He was as a close friend of our son, Matthew Dominick. They rowed together on the University of San Diego Crew Team, and Mike was our son's First Salute at his officer commissioning ceremony in San Diego in 2005. It's a wonderful Navy tradition in which a new officer pays respect to a NCO who was an important influence in his life. Mike was his first and only choice.

At Mike's suggestion, our family had lunch that day at the Kansas City BBQ, the location of the “sleazy bar scene” for the movie “Top Gun.” Mike suggested the location and thought it appropriate as our son was heading to Navy pilot training. The lunch was made even more memorable as Mike and Matt entertained us with lines from the movie and stories from crew training and competition.

We always asked Matt about Mike and, of course, he could not reveal much. However, we did learn the two were able to “communicate” while our son flew overhead in Afghanistan and Mike served on the ground. We had this feeling that they were looking after each other. We know Matt misses Mike, as we all do.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

God Bless,

Don and Rhonda Dominick

Stephen and Diane,
I had the true pleasure of meeting your wonderful son Mike when he was a house guest of mine. One of Mike's many good friends and teammate, Jonathan Echols is a long time family friend. Jon brought Mike to Colorado Springs and they stayed in my home. Mike and I stayed in touch while he was in the U.S. Mike knew I was a country/western music fan and took the time and care to e mail me a play list. In the short time I knew Mike, I came to love and admire him. His smile lit up a room and his impeccable manners were so greatly appreciated. I have a picture of Mike, Jon and myself that I will forward to you in the coming weeks. I also have a text on my phone from Mike that I will save and cherish forever.
Please know my thoughts are with you and your family. I hope our paths cross one day so I can elaborate on the greatness of your son.
Lovingly,
Betsy Lind
