I had Mrs. Kern as a 4th grade student at Maple Lawn Elementary School in 1958-59. I was a very shy student and was the only Indian child in her room. Her classroom was a great place to be because she made me feel safe and secure. Mrs. Kern's classroom was the one place that I didn't get picked on or teased by the other students, because she wouldn't stand for it. Mrs. Kern introduced me to wonderful children's literature such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Charlotte's Web. She was an expert at imitating the voices of Aunt Polly, Tom, Fern and Wilbur. She made the characters come alive and as a result, her story times brought much joy into my life. Mrs. Kern's strength of character, fair mindedness, and sensitivity towards those less fortunate helped shape the person that I have become. At this point in my life I have been teaching for nearly 30 years and much of my teaching style has come directly from Mrs. Kern. My older brother, Fred, also had Mrs. Kern and every now and then he will teasingly call me Mrs. Kern. I always reply, "Thank you, that is a high compliment."

I had Mrs Kern as a teacher in 3rd grade at Maple Lawn Elementary in Sunmer, WA in 1969. I have many memories of Mrs Kern as a teacher, and she will never be fogotten. One of my favorite memories is when she gave out plants at the end of the school year, and I brought home my first cactus. As a third grader I did not fully appreciate the job she did as a teacher. I can truly say that am thankful that she was my teacher.
