Donna Comiskey Obituary

Donna Comiskey
BRUNSWICK - Donna Comiskey, 54, died Friday, February 24, 2012, surrounded by the family she nurtured and loved, from a sudden illness that struck without warning and without mercy.
Until her last breath, she lived each day fully, with laughter and love, touching all who knew her with her kindness, energy and innate goodness.
Donna was born in Albany, the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Coluccio. She graduated from Vincentian High School in 1975 and worked briefly as a dental assistant for Schenectady dentist, Michael Braff, a mentor who encouraged Donna to pursue her education. She graduated from SUNY Albany in 1983 and went on to earn her Masters Degree in Special Education from Manhattanville College, in Purchase, New York.
She married in 1982, finished her education but postponed her career to raise and nurture her three children, who were the center of her life, and to instill in them her strength, love and values.
She later began her career as a teacher, first at Our Lady of Victory School in Troy and then, as a special education teacher at New Turnpike Elementary School in Lansingburgh. She loved her students, especially those who faced special challenges, and she taught with passion, humor and, as with everything she touched, love.
She worked tirelessly as an educator and as an advocate for her students. Her classrooms were special and happy places where children discovered the joy of learning under her warm and protective embrace. In a unique and touching tribute that Donna would have loved, her school has announced that it will be closed to permit her colleagues, students and friends to attend her service.
Donna was an avid runner and loved her weekly runs with her friends, her spin classes and swimming, biking, kayaking and cross-country skiing. Her days were filled with music and she especially loved the theater.
For the last three years, Donna devoted herself to her grand-daughter, Sophia Pascuzzi, and witnessed with delight as Sophia flourished from her special bond with her "Gran-Donna."
Donna is survived by her loving husband of thirty years, William Comiskey. She was his best friend and partner in a life filled with love.
She is survived as well by her children, Sean, David and Catherine; her siblings, Victoria Coluccio of Halfmoon, Frank (Cheryl) Coluccio, of Virginia, Joseph (Carol) Coluccio of Wynantskill, Anthony (Gigi) Coluccio of West Point, Carmen (Susan) Coluccio of Florida, and Patricia (Brian) Dickson of Glenville; and by a large, warm and loving extended family.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc., 565 Fourth Avenue (at the corner of 115th St. in Lansingburgh), Troy on Monday, February 27, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. as well as to Donna's Mass of Christian Burial, which will be held at Our Lady Of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Ave (at Marshland Court) in Troy on Tuesday February 28 at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd, Loudonville, NY 12211, which is a charity that Donna faithfully supported.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc., 565 Fourth Avenue, Troy, New York 12182. (518) 235-0952.

Barbara & Bill Knowles

November 11, 2014

Dear Bill, Sean, David, and Catherine, Today, as my daughter and I were driving through Troy on the way home from Vermont, I told her about a friend who used to live in New Rochelle. I told her how much I liked her, and how sorry I was that we had lost touch, except for Christmas cards, both of us having got caught up in our own lives. I told her that Donna was a very special person, kind and loving, organized and giving, a very together person. I decided to look her up on Facebook to see if I could find her again. When I didn't see anything current, I went further and found Bill and Catherine. I was so shocked and deeply saddened to learn of her passing. I immediately called my husband, Bill, to tell him the sad news. He, too, expressed shock and sadness. We are so sorry we didn't know, and so sorry for your loss. She was truly special. I know that she was so proud of each of you, and loved you more than anything. May you be comforted by your memories of a beautiful life well lived. Peace.

Thank you to all who wrote these beautiful messages. I still read them. They still bring me comfort and help me remember the beautiful woman who was my partner in life.

God bless you all. Bill

Mr. Comiskey and family,

I am so sorry to hear of Donna's passing. I played soccer many years ago with the boys and had Mr. Comiskey as a coach in AYSO. I also attended TES many years ago, although I do not remember if Donna taught there at that time or not. From reading all the entries and hearing what was said, she was obviously a phenomenal teacher, and will be missed tremendously! My heartfelt condolences on her passing... I know that no words can ease the grief you are feeling, but look to God and your family in this time. Remember the good times you had with her to ease your suffering!

God Bless!

Dear Bill & family, We were so saddened by the news of Donna's passing. She was such a wonderful, fun-loving person. She lit up the soccer sidelines at so many games as we watched our sons play. I cannot picture her except with a big smile, that great laugh, and a good word for everyone. You will have so many wonderful memories to keep with you at all times - hopefully they will eventually dull the pain of her loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. My deepest condolences to “Mrs. Comiskey's” family.
I was fortunate enough to have her as my second grade teacher at OLV and I'll never forget what a kind and wonderful person she was.
I never once remember her raising her voice or berating us, despite how raucous we could be. I have many fond memories of her, but one that stands out… I sat in the front of the class and while she was reading us a book, I sat there listening and picking my nose. She caught me and simply touched her nose and shook her head without taking a break from reading. I guess I remember it because I was embarrassed, but thinking back now I realize that she did it in the most subtle way possible to spare me from humiliation.
It's a silly story, but one that reflects her nature. Thank you for sharing her with us.

To Donna's Family,
I am a teacher of the visually impaired, who had the pleasure of working with Donna about 14 years ago. I feel so fortunate to have "crosses paths" with Donna, and will always remember the wisdom she shared with myself and her students. I've worked with many teachers in many classrooms, but Donna was a "shining star!" God Bless you all.

Dear Mr. Comiskey and family, All these messages echo everything I ever heard my Mom say about Donna and what I know only having met her a few times. It inspires you to want to be kinder to everyone everyday and to spread a lot more laughter and happiness. She obviously had such a great impact on so many people and that is so rare. Hopefully all who were touched by her will spread it forward; but so sorry for you having lost her so young. My mom, Connie, who taught with Donna for many years and loved her as a friend too, is thinking of you.

February 26, 2012

I cannot find the words to describe how shocked & saddened I am over the death of this wonderful woman. What really gets me is that my 3 yr old grand-niece, Sophia, who was Donna's grandchild, will not have the continued benefit of Donna's grace & wisdom, caring & kindness, as she moves forward in her life, and that just makes me so very sad. Donna was such a wonderful role model for Sophia. I always believed that she was very very special & truly unique in her goodness. It is tragic to think of the people she nurtured around her, who feel deep grief, and I have not been able to stop my own tears since I heard this awful news. I have to believe that she is now an angel in the hereafter, watching over her family that she loved so much. May God bless all who loved Donna at this time.

I met Donna 19 years ago when our little girls went to nursery school together. Donna announced one day at drop off that she would be interviewing for a position at TES. She was so excited and wanted to know everything about our school. Thankfully, Gordie hired her. She quickly became a part of our "Turnpike Family" and has touched the hearts of many. We thank you, her family, for the endless hours you have shared her with all of us. We will forever keep memories of Donna alive and may your memories help you to heal from this loss. Turnpike Family,
Donna was an amazing teacher and mentor. I had the pleasure to student teach under her direction in the fall of 2009. I will forever remember her enthusiasm and humor. She smiled each and every day, no matter what. Donna was team oriented. She was always willing to help out in whatever way she could. Her love for her students and family was endless. She frequently talked about her family being so proud of them. I am deeply saddened that the Turnpike Family lost one of the greatest teachers to have ever taught.

Donna was an amazing teacher! She was always able to bring out the best in all her students. She always focused on the positive. I will miss you Donna! I will miss talking to you about our families, Broadway Shows, and running. Your warm heart and spirited presence will always be felt at Turnpike. May God bless you and your family.

Mr. Comisky, Sean, David, and Catherine, I was so sad to hear of Donna's passing this morning. She was so good to bring the kids to my parents house to see me off to the prom and was so interested in what was going on in my life every time I was over to baby sit. Even at a young age, I knew you guys were a special family that she, no doubt, was so proud to be a part of. Much love and prayers to all of you.
