Robert Fivel Obituary

Dominican Republic-Robert Alan Fivel, formerly of Troy, passed away on December 27, 2020, while in the Dominican Republic. Robert attended Troy High School where he lettered in swimming and soccer. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in biology from the State University of New York at New Paltz and received a Masters Degree from RPI. He began his career as a microbiologist at the New York State Health Department. He later worked at the Sterling Drug facility in Rensselaer, and finally for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals from which he retired. Robert and two of his science colleagues pioneered the development of a method for determining whether facilites which were responsible for testing public water supplies conducted accurate testing procedures. They formed a company called QC3 Associates, Inc. The method involved preparing a water sample with a certain count of bacteria and holding that count constant until a water testing lab could perform a test to determine the bacteria count and sending the results of their test back to QC3 to verfify the tests' accuracy. Robert was an accomplished saxaphone player and performed with an Averill Park dance band for several years. He was a tournamentlevel handball player and formed many lasting friendships on and off the handball court. His quick and intelligent sense of humor was his trademark quality. If you tried to repeat a joke he told, it just did not sound as humorous as when Bob told it. Robert is survived by his brother, Norman Fivel, his sister-in-law Joanne Fivel, his cousin, Ronnye Shamam, and his niece and nephew, Michelle Fivel Douglas and Scott Fivel, both of whom he adored. Funeral arrangements will be performed in the Dominican Republic. A remembrance will be held for his state-side family and friends when health conditions permit. http://www.lastingmemories.com/robert-alan-fivel

My friend made me laugh, we both loved a good laugh and I can remember quite a few.
" Hey, ya need us to call you a cab to get to the curb?"
I thought the two of us would wet ourselves!!! Not just us, but the two in the car as well!!
God Rest Your Soul my Friend, you are sorely missed.

Norm, my brother Tom just sent me the obituary for Bobby and I am so sorry to hear of his death. As someone who has lost a brother, I can relate to the sorrow you and your family are feeling now.

I was so impressed by his many achievements - what a busy and fulfilled life he had. I am sure you are proud of him. As I know you have so many friends in our 66 class, I will let them know of his passing as many may have other access to you and would like, I am sure, to express their condolences and support

Prayers to you and Bobby's entire family

Bobby was a great friend of mine since about the 6th grade up through high school. We did not keep in contact, but we played sax together in the School 18 and THS bands and dance bands...and sneaked into Frear Park to play golf on many occasions. My deep sympathy to Norman and the rest of the family.

To Norm & Bob's family please accept my most sincere condolences in the loss of Bob. Bob & I had been friends since the 2nd grade and shared a lot of the same activities - band, dance band, soccer- and we spent a lot of time at each other's family residences. Bob was always a jolly guy and was always smiling. His wit & love of music were beyond reproach. He will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace my friend !

I am saddened to read of Bobby's passing. He was Bobby when I taught him at School 18. He is a big part of the wonderful memories I have of those early teaching days. His obit. Contains all the things he was as a child: sports, music and humor. I will always remember that big smile.
