Daniel Newburn Obituary

Daniel Edward Newburn "Dan" 1/19/1949 - 9/18/2014 Our beloved husband, father, son and brother passed away peacefully on September 18, 2014, surrounded by his family. Dan was born in Memphis, Tennessee and moved to Arizona to attend high school and the University of Arizona. Dan joined the Tucson Fire Department on February 4, 1974. He dedicated 34 years of service and leadership to the Tucson Fire Department, achieving the rank of Fire Chief, which position he held from July 1, 2001 to September 12, 2008. Dan's proudest accomplishment was his family, who could not be more proud of him. We will always feel Dan's deep love, compassion and happiness and are truly blessed to have had him in our lives. His was a light that will never be extinguished. Dan is survived by his wife, Katie; daughters, Molly (Brian), Megan (Tommy) and his precious and much-loved granddaughter, Emerson; who has her granddaddy's smiling blue eyes. He is also survived by his mother, Wanda Ford and his sisters, Sandra Maxedon and Dorothy Weber. Private Services will be held to celebrate his extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Last Alarm Foundation http://lastalarm foundation.com/donations/. Condolences may be left by visiting his obituary at www.vistosofh.com.

There was a small group of us, all best friends, and each of us considered ourselves Danny's best friend. When I was 16, I helped him sand down his 36 Ford--we painted it yellow, and I loved riding to school in that thing. He lived a block from me in high school...I helped him carry his Farfisa organ when he played rock and roll in a terrific band "The Disciples." Then we went to college together...I shared three houses with Danny...we even built a room in his basement for me to have a home. He and I had a business together--we drove my truck a couple of times to Kansas buying antiques, then back in Tucson we'd refinish them and sell them--did all right. He and I played music together--we harmonized on Everly songs, tore up "Beat Me Daddy 8 to the Bar" countless times, me on guitar, Danny on piano. He and I camped endlessly, often simply sitting somewhere quiet and reading. We had to walk down a mountain one stormy night, fearing we might die of exposure, making it home at 5am...I could write a book about this man, and another one just about our shared experiences...he was a born storyteller, a Tennessee raconteur who'd have everyone in stitches..."Danny, tell that story about Queenie!" God bless him--it's hard to imagine a world without this life force. He asked me once, a long time ago, to sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at his service if I outlived him...I will sing that to you, old friend, out here in my mountain town in California, I'll sing it a number of times and it'll help me to remember the sweet life we shared--our youth, our 20s and 30s--farewell, and my deepest-felt thanks to the world for putting us together, for a richness of life that will follow me forever. Bye, Danny...

We, as citizens, never get to really meet those that answer the call of duty as a first responder, we are only very thankful that they are a phone call away. To the family of Mr. Newburn, I want to say "thank you". Thank you for having such a wonderful man in your life that put others before himself. May he rest in peace.
