David Harvey Obituary

David Allen Harvey 54, of Tucson, AZ died of gastric cancer on September 6, 2012 at Casa de la Luz hospice. Born on March 7, 1958 in Big Spring, Texas, David was the oldest child of Thomas Harvey, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and Sallyann DeWoody Harvey. David's interests included photography, computer programming and astronomy. He graduated in 1976 from Millard Senior High School in Omaha, NE and won several Kodak Gold Key awards for photojournalism. David attended college at the University of Arizona, majoring in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, and worked at the Flandrau Planetarium and then at the UA Office of the Vice President for Research. In 1982 he began working as a systems programmer at Steward Observatory where he developed the control system software for the University's six large astronomical telescopes, including telescopes on Kitt Peak, Mt. Lemmon and Mt. Graham. For helping with the Catalina Sky Survey, colleagues named an asteroid after him. He worked at Steward for 30 years, finally retiring in April, 2012. In addition to his work at Steward, David earned his instrument-rated pilot's license and founded and ran two businesses: David A. Harvey Photography and Comsoft. The latter business specialized in telescope control systems used in over 70 telescopes worldwide. In the early 1990s he began working with digital photography. With his business partner, Michelle Rasmussen, he ran a studio portrait business from 2004 - 2009. He then branched into corporate, architectural, and nature photography, garnering numerous awards and publications. David was a member of the Professional Photographers of America and National Press Photographers of America. He became known for his stunning celestial images such as solar and lunar eclipses. Some of his best work incorporating his scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and keen artistic eye is currently being exhibited at the Dakota Café, Tucson. Feisty, brilliant, generous, and dedicated, David was loved and admired by his family, friends, and colleagues. He was taken from us much too soon. He is survived by his loving wife, Gwen Russell Harvey; his son, Scott Harvey; his daughters, Tabatha, Rebecca and Laurie Harvey; his grandchildren, Sky, Dustin, Joshua, Jacob, Michael and Corey; his parents, Thomas and Sallyann Harvey; his sister, Victoria "Vicki" Harvey Sanders; his aunt, Patti DeWoody Gerstenmaier Owen; his uncle, Ronald Scott Harvey and his cousins, Robert Scott, Marti, Trina and Constance. Donations in his memory can be made to PBS/NPR at Arizona Public Media, P.O. Box 210067 Tucson, AZ 85721 or the Flandrau Science Center, 1601 E. University Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85721. I still think of you often Dave! Especially when I´m trying a new light in a portrait. I think ` what would Dave do?´ Mostly I miss our conversations about creative living! Thank you for your generosity and kindness. I have not forgotten you. `Be well, Be Happy´ was your last message to me! I needed to be reminded of that today.

I was just thinking of you yesterday and your last 4 words to me were ‘ Be well. Be Happy.’ Sometimes, when I’m anxious or sad, I repeat these words to myself as a sort of mantra In honor of your life and Your inspiration to others. It’s such simple, but insightful advise. Thank you for your friendship. You Are missed.

David Allen Harvey, you are a friend. I will always remember you as someone who would brought fun and life to the halls of Steward Observatory. The time we spent on the projects we worked on together and your wonderful humor are even to this day a part of my life. Much more than you may have known.

You are an inspiration. Your passion for photography forever changed who I am. Your kindness and your eagerness to share that passion enabled me to pursue my own.

You had the ability to not only see the beauty around you, but share that beauty you see with others in a way that is so very rare.

You will be missed, and you will be remembered. You have left a beautiful mark on this world that will continue to inspire.

Thank you Dave, for being you. I pray that one day we will meet again.

Dave's strong spirit was evident in his fight against cancer. What a fighter he was! Dave continued to take photos and to be with his family as long as possible. He accomplished much in his life, including building a loving family, taking hundreds (or is it thousands?) of beautiful photos and doing excellent work for the U of A. Although his life was cut short, it was certainly a full one, and he is missed by many, many folks. Sending love and prayers to Gwen and the girls.

I will never forget you Dave, you are in my heart and thoughts every day. I learned so much from you , not just about photography, but about having the courage to stand up for my convictions and to admire honesty in myself and others. You have truly helped so many to appreciate the beauty of the 'heavens' by showing us , with your eyes, the mystery and majesty of the universe. Keep shining Dave... We all love you..

Dave you were not a photographer - you were an artist and your medium was photography. You were my daughter, Michelle Rasmussen's, mentor and taught her the difference - your unselfishness will allow your style to work through her. Thank you, my friend...RIP, Dave

The photo I posted of the earth and the moon is a view from the "other side" taken by Voyager as it journeyed away from earth. As the caption reads, "a shift in perspective is all it is." I know David would have loved to see the earth from this angle...maybe...just maybe...
