Frank Culin Obituary
Frank L. Culin, III Frank was born in Manila, the Philippine Islands June 22, 1922, and passed away April 30, 2006 in Tucson, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Frank L. Culin. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC and moved with his family to Arizona in 1940. He attended the University of Arizona where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was a four-year letterman on the University of Arizona Track Team, and belonged to the Theta Tau Engineering Honorary Fraternity. Frank was a member of the "Fighting 56": the last ROTC mounted Calvary Unit at the University of Arizona. He met his wife, Jeanne, at the University and married her May 6, 1944, shortly before he departed for Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning Georgia. Frank served in the 87th Infantry Division in the WWII Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he returned to the University of Arizona and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He began his engineering career working for the Steven's Company, and the Harold Ashton Company. He was recalled to military service during the Korean War and was stationed in Okinawa with the Army Corps of Engineers. Frank returned to Tucson in 1950, and worked for the family firm: Romine, Hogan, Culin Builders, Inc. In 1951 he started his own business: Frank L. Culin Excavation Company, Inc. He owned and operated the company for 36 years until he retired. He was a member of the 87th Infantry Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the University of Arizona Wildcat Club, and a Life Member of the University of Arizona Alumni Association. He was past president of the United Sub-Contractors of Tucson, and the recipient of their Outstanding Service Award for 1976-1977. Frank was elected in 1988 to Life Membership in Tucson Elks' Lodge 385, where he was a member for 49 years. Remembered as a completely loving man and a perfect gentleman, Frank is survived by his wife, Jeanne Romine Culin; daughter, Barbara Culin Rench (Quentin); sons, Frank L. Culin IV (Mary) and Lewis R. Culin. His surviving grandchildren are Frank L. Culin V (Jen), Jennifer L. Culin, Deborah Rench Lema (Scott) and Kevin Rench; great-grandchildren are Brady Matthew Culin and Cheyenne Rench. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Culin Roberts; his brother, Col. John E. Culin (Barbara) and his sister-in-law, Barbara Romine Hogan (Bill); nieces and nephews include: Bill Hogan, Susan Hogan Young, Lauri Ann Nygren, Betsy Harmon, Carol Scott Russell, Marcia Scott Hayes, James Culin Scott, John E. Culin, Jr., Susan Virginia Culin and Nancy Kathryn Eisenhard. Numerous cousins, great-nieces and nephews also survive him. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, May 6, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway, 85710. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Lung Association of Arizona, 2819 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85716 the University of Arizona, 1111 N. Cherry Ave., Tucson, AZ 85721 or a personal favorite charity are suggested.
