Jay Abrams Obituary

ABRAMS, Jay Alan

passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021 in Tucson. Jay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin October 18, 1947. His father rejoined the Air Force as a regular officer from 1950 until his retirement in 1977 when he and his wife Esther moved to Tucson. Like all military kids, Jay traveled the world and the country with his family, living in Japan and Newfoundland, Canada, among other places. Through all of this time, from middle school on, Jay struggled with mental illness, moving from home for a few years in an attempt to find a cure which would neverarrive. He moved back home when his father was stationed in Colorado and moved with his parents to Tucson after his father's retirement, where he lived without a break for more than 43 years. Although his illness kept him from fulfilling his own dreams and fantasies of life, he livedas well as he could. He enjoyed eating out, visiting tourist attractions, visiting his brother and sister-in-law in California, collecting coins, reading about airplanes, cars, and various facts, and in later years, participating in Our Place Clubhouse, a cooperative community for people overcoming or coping with mental illness. He loved Tucson and Arizona. Although the circle of his life shrank with time, he remained unfailingly polite, friendly, and willing to please to the degree his illness and later physical failures allowed; he was beloved by all who knew him and who cared for him. He deserved more, but rarely complained. He is survived by his brother, Barry; his sister-in-law, Ellen; his nephew, Joseph; cousins and all the friends he acquired in his time in Tucson. Announcements regarding a memorial gathering will appear later. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to NAMI Southern Arizona, https://www.namisa.org/, or to Our Place Clubhouse, https://www.ctftucson.org/donate. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

I was so sorry to learn of Jay´s passing. I worked with Jay at the public library many years ago. He loved working in the children´s area looking at picture books and telling stories about what he read. He was a kind and caring soul. Peace to him and his family.

My sincerest condolences to Jay´s family. I worked in the library where Jay
volunteered and fondly remember him. You could count on seeing Jay coming to work always wearing his Western hat, his boots and eating a jelly doughnut...sometimes there was more jelly on his shirt than on the donut! I hope he enjoyed being with us at the library as much as we enjoyed him. Rest in heavenly peace sweet Jay.

My condolences to Jay's family.

Jay volunteered for me at the Sam Lena South Tucson Library for many years before I retired and I have such wonderful memories of Jay! How he loved jelly donuts and soda, how he was a wealth of trivia (which came in really handy at the library), and how much he loved the Tucson rodeo!

Whenever I think of the rodeo, I think of Jay. He'd come to work dressed like a cowboy, and ask the staff over and over whether or not he looked handsome in his suede, fringed Western jacket, cowboy hat and cowboy boots! And he always did! I have wondered what happened to our sweet Jay, and am sorry to have seen his obituary today. He will always have a special place in my heart.

I believe I knew Jay from the VA hospital where I was a nurse. We used to play scrabble and dispute good-naturedly over rules and whether an entry was really a word. Often he was distracted, and talked to voices instead of to me, but was always willing. It was I who had trouble figuring up scores and one time he just looked at me and said "How did you ever pass algebra?" I still laugh at the memory. He was sweet and funny. I pray that he was able to fulfill his soul´s purpose. God bless him.
