John Thorup Obituary

John Steinke Thorup, 82, died at his home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 11, 2024, of heart and kidney failure following a fall in December and a long decline due to Parkinson's Disease. Born November 27, 1941, in Salinas, California, his childhood was spent in California, New Mexico, and Arizona, where his father worked as a farm manager and farmer. He attended Kingman High School, graduated from Willcox High, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Arizona in 1963, majoring in Spanish and minoring in math. After training as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force, he settled in Tucson. He completed his military obligation flying with the Arizona Air National Guard through 1972. John joined Pan American World Airways in 1966 and flew for them as a co-pilot, flight engineer, and captain on the Boeing 707, 727, 737, and 747. In 1969, he began police work as a detective, forest firefighter, process server, and guard for the Pima County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies. As a child, he was expected by the adults around him to become a college professor, but no one interest captivated him enough to concentrate on it. His life reflected his varied passions. He went to six continents, all but the Arctic, and especially loved train travel. His longest trip was across the USSR on the Trans-Siberian Railway; in 1981, he went across the Sahara in a Land Rover. His library contained every kind of book imaginable, from poetry to the lives of Western outlaws. His accounts of his trips and other adventures, helped by an almost superhuman memory, were sometimes not believed, but always true. Charismatic, generous, curious, and witty, John filled the room without trying. He pursued his dream of being the good sheriff and saving the town by learning your impossible dream and attempting to make it come true. He changed lives in the process.

John was predeceased by his parents, Chris and Nan Thorup, and his brother-in-law, John Preston. He is survived by his sister, Christy (Thorup) Preston, of Chino Valley, Arizona; nephew Chris Preston (Michelle), and their son, Cole, of Garland, Texas; nephew Mitch Preston and his fiancée, Tina Patton, of Scottsdale; many California cousins, including Jim and Deb Thorup of Chico and Andrea Thorup of Sacramento; and long-time partner, Dianne Timbers, of Tucson. He was honored to be called "Grandpa John" by Dianne's grandnieces: Brittney, Layna, Tessa, and McKenna, of Nome, Alaska.

John gave generously to many different causes. In lieu of flowers, a donation to one of his favorites may be made: Planned Parenthood, Doctors without Borders, Casa de los Ninos, or Youth on Their Own. A service in his memory will take place at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, Tucson, on March 16th at 11 AM. In deference to family and friends who have allergies and sensitivities, please do not wear scented products.

I knew John as a kid and was going through my mom´s things today and found a card with his Tucson address on it and decided to google him. I have fun memories talking with him about Pan Am (my mom was a flight attendant for the Company). Sad to hear he had passed.

I continually think about John. He was a true friend. I didn't see him as much as I would have liked. However, we were there for each other for whatever we needed. I miss him!

John was always such a welcome addition to our HEAL of So. Az. meetings. What a wonderful man. Always so nice to see him & Dianne Timbers together. I wish I had gotten to know him better as I've been learning lately what an accomplished & interesting person he was.

John was one-of-a-kind in the best of ways. We share a passion for adventure. He loved to offer travel advice, so I truly enjoyed a Turkish bath in Turkey, for example. John's photographic memory detailed hearty stories around the fire at the cabin in Arroyo Seco near Salinas. The Thorup families treasured his annual visits and reminders of shared times with the cousins on the river. His visits grew even sweeter when Dianne was well enough to make the journey and take walk-and-talks up to the vineyards.
We'll have more reunions in the future, John. Keep me posted on the travel advice when Jim and I take the Canadian train to Jasper this summer.

Sincere condolences to John's family and friends. John and I go back to 1959, at the University of Arizona, where we both were freshmen.

John Thorup, or "Uncle John" as he was known to me and my siblings, came into our lives in the early 1980´s when he needed a live-in house sitter to take care of his house and dog (big wonderful Oliver!) and run errands for him while he was off flying for Pan Am and take him to and from the airport, while we had a close walk to classes at the University. We all stayed in touch after we finished school. I was fortunate to be on Uncle John´s UA basketball game rotation for spare tickets right on the court. I would run into Uncle John a bit owing to his work for the Sheriff and my work at the County Attorney´s Office. Whether on the phone or at his second house we had lengthy talks about his upbringing, his house by the University, his flying days for rock bands, train travel, his private scholarships for deserving students who grew up like he did, and all sorts of other things. He was so down to earth, folksy, appreciative of so many people in his life and so, so smart. He made me think about and appreciate a lot of things in this world, and I learned a lot of things from him. He will be missed by me and my family and I hope with all my heart that he is in a good place, back to his healthy form, and scratching Oliver behind his ear right now.

John Thorup was a dear friend and just as fine a companion as anyone could want. I suspect we knew each other for maybe 60 years and always were delighted to cross paths and resume a lifelong conversation about life. Cheers, John. See you at the next basketball game, one way or another.
