Lou-Ann Preble Obituary

On May 2, 2024, Lou-Ann M. (Baumann) Preble was called to our Lord after 94 years on this earth. She was surrounded by family. A Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Nurse, World Traveler, Civic Volunteer and Arizona State Legislator, she led quite an amazing life.Born to Albert "AJ" and Allene (Mabry) Baumann on September 26, 1929, she grew up in Sumter, South Carolina during the depression and World War II. She earned her RN certification at Tuomey Hospital in 1948 the year, she met William "Bill" Preble, a USAF pilot stationed at the nearby Shaw Field. They married in December of 1949.As an Air Force wife and Mom to 11 children, Lou-Ann and Bill raised their family all over the world. Upon Bill's 1972 retirement, the family settled in Tucson and became active in the schools and church, and working tirelessly for the Republican Party.Lou-Ann won a seat in the Arizona Legislature in 1992 and served until 2001. Her expertise was in Health and Human Services, with an emphasis on the development of Telemedicine in Arizona's rural communities. Her programs to increase the access to medical doctors and support services in the rural communities have remained viable. The Lou-Ann Preble Community Health Center is a tribute to her rural healthcare commitment. Establishing the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in the Sierra Vista area allowed veterans to be laid to rest closer to their homes and families. And Bill stepped in as her chief research specialist, scheduler and chauffeur. He often remarked "She followed me all over the world. Now it's her turn."Bill and Lou-Ann celebrated as their family grew through their children's marriages, welcoming many dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren. There was no greater joy than spoiling a new little family member. In 2010, Bill passed away due to complications of Alzheimer's. Lou-Ann stayed in the family home and continued to volunteer with the Republican Party, attend meetings and mentor young politicians.Lou-Ann is preceded in death by her Parents, AJ and Allene Baumann, her brother, Robert, and her husband, Bill. She is succeeded by all 11 children, Bill Preble, Cindy Preble Coleman, Trish Preble, Mike Preble, Carolyn Jones, John Preble, Mary Preble, Andy Preble, Matt Preble, Kate Preble and Margie Creedon-Preble, their respective spouses, children and grandchildren. She was beloved by her niece Jacqueline Baumann and her many Preble in-laws. Lou-Ann and Bill were among the first friends we made when we moved to Tucson in 1979. They opened their hearts to us. I worked with both of them on various GOP campaigns. We lost touch for a while. Then out of the blue last year, Lou-Ann called and we reconnected and caught up. We're very sorry not to have had more time together. She and Bill will be missed and remembered. Rest in well-deserved peace!

Lou-Ann led an extraordinary life of service and compassion which will be her legacy to the community she served. Her great family is the result of Lou-Ann and Bill's great example they always set. I primarily knew her through GOP politics and she was one of the best leaders we had in the legislature for many years. As a Republican Party activist she could always be counted on when a difficult job had to get done. Lou-Ann always deflected praise to others she worked with and she always worked hard to mentor young leaders which was one of her greatest accomplishments. Lou-Ann and Bill were most proud of their family for good reason and there lives will always be considered a blessing to all they came to know and work with together. Condolences to all the Preble family members.
