Michael SAUNDERS Obituary

SAUNDERS, Michael R. age 69, passed away on November 24, 2017, in Green Valley, Arizona, after a seven-year battle against prostate cancer. He was born in Batavia, N.Y., on June 29, 1948, the son of Irene and John Saunders. After graduating from high school in Elba, N.Y., in 1966, he eventually settled in Arizona, where he earned a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Arizona and where he became a Pima County Adult Probation Officer in 1975. He was subsequently promoted to a Field Unit Supervisor in 1990 and retired after 25 years of service in 2000. Mike was very active and enjoyed traveling, camping, tennis, cycling, prospecting with his friend Rich; hunting, fishing, sailing and dancing. He was a kind, caring man who always had a smile to offer to his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy. He is survived by his parents, three step-children: Dave, John and Heather, and his fiance Cynthia Weber, who felt blessed each day she spent with him. You are missed but will never be forgotten. Special thanks to Dr. Porterfield, his staff; Hospice Family Care and especially Kate, for all their help and support. No services are planned, at Michael's request.

I am a family member from Mike's former wife. I'm so sorry if I bring up painful memories but, I just learned of his passing and felt I needed to tell someone how
much he meant to me as you boy of about 12 years old. He spent much time with me showing me little home repairs, teaching me how to ride motorcycle, teaching me photography tips, or just letting me tag along with him wherever he was going. I'll never forget my ride in his light blue MGB. That was the greatest. It felt like there was nothing he didn't know about and no end to his skills. I'm now 61 years old, and the memories are still vivid, as is my admiration of him. I'm deeply saddened by his passing, even though it was back in 2017. I wish I could have seen him again. I'm sorry too, for his current families loss. That will be huge hole to fill. I'm just heartbroken and I wanted to send my since condolences. I'm sorry this is so after the fact. I didn't know till about an hour ago.

I just received word of Mike's untimely passing. He was the first Pima County Adult Probation officer assigned to the jail. He was a fine officer and a credit to probation. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to his family.

I interned with Mike during my senior year at the U of A 1979/80. He was the kindest, most ethical, and outstanding role model for his co-workers and probationers.May he rest in peace. Condolences to all of his family and friends.

Very sad to learn of Mike's passing. I worked with him in probation and he taught me how to deal with the most challenging of people. I'll never forget him. My condolences to all.
