Penelope Porter Obituary

Penelope Anne Porter, 81, passed away peacefully on February 15th 2024 at her home in Tucson, surrounded by her loved ones and caregivers. Penny is survived by her sister Christa Porter of San Jose, California, as well as countless friends and loved ones who will miss her dearly.Born on November 14th 1942 in Newton Iowa, Penny was a beacon of strength and caring to all who knew her. She lived her life with a boundless love for animals, a tireless work ethic, and a unwavering focus on helping the less advantaged that touched the hearts of everyone she met.Penny achieved her dream of being able to care for animals by being one of the few women to graduate as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1969. She went on to open and operate several successful veterinary practices in Tucson and the surrounding area as an entrepreneurial business woman and mentor to many.Penny's parents were artists by trade who had many hobbies in arts and crafts, which she pursued with skill and enthusiasm. Whether she was creating Christmas ornaments, glass beads, or decorating, her skill and appreciation for the arts always shown brightly.Above all, Penny cherished her family and friends including her secondary family; her clinic staff, clients, but most of all the animals. She was a devoted sister, daughter, friend, and mentor, always ready with a listening ear, and a shoulder to lean on. She leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.In her memory, let us carry forward the lessons she taught us — to love those around us, especially animals, to be generous and help the less advantaged, and to live fully every moment we are given.A celebration of Penny's life will be held at the home of her friends Bill and Joe from 2pm to 5pm on the 21st of April 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made using https://heartsw.com/ to "Dr. Penelope Porter fund" these donations will be used to fund needy animals treated at the Ajo Veterinary Clinic she established in south Tucson.Though she may be gone from our sight, Penny's spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched. May she rest in peace, knowing that she was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all.

Penny was a good friend to my cousin, Denise, and her pets. Penny was always ready to help out when one of the dogs was ill, and she always worked with Denise to make it affordable.
Penny had a big heart and will be missed by many two and four legged friends.

I knew Penny through a mutual friend, Denise Eddows. I am so glad I have good memories of Penny including one Christmas party at her home. She received a call from a dog owner who was distraught that her two large dogs had eaten an entire box of specialty chocolates. She handled the call, reassured the owners to just put the dogs outside and what to look for in which case they could call her back, but that they should go right on with their own party. And so did Penny.

I first became aware of Penny via an article she wrote about pets in Reader's Digest oh so many years ago...I wrote to her and she responded. I was in awe of her talents and love for animals. I will miss her very much...rest in peace dear, Penny.

Penny, there has not been a day that goes by that I don´t think about you and miss you. I´m so glad you are in a better place, but you have left such a huge hole in my life. I will see you again my friend.

My husband and I met Dr. Porter in Green Valley in 1973. Her clinic just opened and we needed a vet to care for our new puppy Calamity. She saved Calamity's life 3 times. We continued to take our pets to Ajo Vet when she moved to Tucson. She was there to comfort me when my 14 year cat had to be put to sleep in 2014. I cried and she comforted me. That was the last time I saw this wonderful soul.

A lovely and caring person who chuckled when I brought my three cats at once for their shots and check-ups. Penny was also a wonderful resident in our neighborhood. Thank you for your service to our animal companions and to our neighborhood.
