Thomas Way Obituary

Thomas Fredrick Way, MD Our beloved father, grandpa, brother and uncle died on January 4, 2011, in Tucson, Arizona, and entered into the hands of our Lord Jesus. A Roman Catholic man who lived the Gospel of Life by his example through the very end of his life, was born July 18, 1930, in Manchester, Michigan, to Orville and Louise Way. A graduate of Manchester High School, and Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, he had a deep passion for the healing arts and a thirst for the knowledge of how our bodies worked. Thomas attended St. Louis University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri and became a Medical Doctor who, for the majority of his career, practiced solo as a General Surgeon in Merced, California. Before moving to Merced, Thomas married his wife, Therese Kuti and started their 52 years of marriage together. Thomas served as a Captain in the Army and was stationed in Korea, Ft. Ord in Monterey, California and Squaw Valley, California for the 1960 Winter Olympics. Thomas ultimately settled in Merced, California where he and his wife raised their eight children. He vigorously defended his Catholic faith and spread the Message of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy to all. In his spare time he loved to fish anywhere and everywhere from the Gulf of Mexico to Northern Alaska. He fished alone, with friends and with family. In the last six years of his life, he and his wife moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he celebrated and shared the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, and later St. Cyrils Catholic Church. He is survived by his eight children, Bernie (Rhonda), Patrick (Penny), Teri Lu Stewart, Lisa Baricevic, Thomas, Jana, Marilynn Schicker (Todd) and Robert (Toni). He was blessed with 26 grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Kenneth (Kathleen), John Francis and Bernard (Ethel) and one sister, Geraldine (Clare) as well as many nieces and nephews. Donations should be made to The Marians of the Immaculate Conception, Eden Hill, Stockbridge, MA 01263. Visitation 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Sunday, January 9, 2011 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 10, 2011 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd. Entombment to follow at Our Lady of the Desert Mausoleum.

I just learned from my sister of Tom's death. I went to High School with him and remember all the fun we had, our senior trip, high school parties, basketball, and many other things. I havent seen him since we all went away to college and our careers but have thought of him many times. I even worked for a summer at the bakery with he, his brothers, and dad. I lived in Tucson until about 7 years ago and left just about the time he came. My condolences to all of you. Be consoled in a life well lived. Suzanne Merriman Kent, Fishers, IN

To the Way family: You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I have the best memories of being with you at your home or at St. Anthony's/Immaculate Conception in Atwater. Your folks were great. Your dad so patient and kind; wise and understanding. He was insightful and absolutely faithful. He was a true Catholic man, husband and father. I have the greatest admiration for all of you. I miss our contact. You will be in my prayers, especially as I offer my Masses this week.

To all the Way family, It was a great pleasure to know all of you when you were here in Merced. I had some great times with mom and dad. Enjoyed playing cards with some of you and had lots of laughs. I know you are going to miss your dad. He was a wonderful surgeon and I had him operate on me several years ago when he was still in merced. Smypathy to all of you. Love Sandy

To the Way Family and friends. I want you to know that Dr. Way saved my life with his expertise during my emergency surgery some 40 years ago. If he hadn't been there to see me through, I probably wouldn't have made it. We have always been in his debt. May God Bless and keep you close to his heart. with Prayers and Blessings

Dear Jana, Tommy, Lisa, and all the Ways,
My Janie and I are saddened to hear of the passing your beloved father. We have always felt a special fondness for all the Way "kids," several of whom were in my high school English class. Jana, you were such a positive influence on Stacy; Mama Teri was one of my closest friends and colleagues; and we often recall our great times with the MGC, and especially Thanksgiving at the Way home with Julianne McNamara and family. Our sincere condolences. Jana, we'd love to see you.
