Walter Douglas Obituary

Walter "Nibs" Douglas III 64, of Tucson, passed away May 3, 2007. Born in Tucson, he married Jeretta (Rice) on September 1, 1967. Walter is survived by his loving wife, Jeretta; two daughters, Merva (and her husband Derrick) and Andrea Kelley and two sons, Scott Douglas and Donald Douglas, all of Tucson; two sisters, Elizabeth Giorgis and Firelei Douglas and a brother, Don Douglas; four grandchildren, Tyler Kelley, Cooper Kelley, James Kelley and Naomi Bridges and many other relatives. He spent his entire mining career with Magma Copper and considered mining to be his life's work. Walt enjoyed collecting minerals throughout Arizona with many of his friends. He was an avid racing fan and delighted in his role as a grandfather to four children who loved him dearly. He was generous and loving and left behind countless friends and family who will miss his humor, his conversation and his gentle smile as well as his signature head of hair that his wife lovingly maintained for over forty years. We will miss you Dad. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, May 7, 2007 at Dove of Peace Lutheran Church (665 W. Roller Coaster, 887-5127). Donations can be made to the Walter Douglas Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, Walter Douglas Elementary School and the Casa de la Luz Foundation (544-9890).

Dear Jeretta,

Thank you for encouraging me to spend time with Nibs when I was in Tucson last month. The visits were very meaningful to me.

Nibs was a dear friend in our growing up years and I will always remember our times together with great fondness.

Please convey my love to the rest of the family.

His Nibs and my family go back a long way. As kids we shared adult free camping adventures at Sabino, expeditions to Mexico, walks home from downtown, and car and bike chases at Gilpin in the days when FW kids lived free and wandered wide. I left town years ago but was in touch with Nibs recently. We just picked up where we left off. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed well beyond his immediate circle. My condolences to the families. Tom Holladay, Laredo, TX.

Jerretta and family,

I’ve known Nibs since 1957 in our sophomore year at FWHS. He was always a fun guy to be around. I’ll never forget hearing about the night he tried to drive the bus through Johnie’s Drive-in. He had a magnetic personality and that drew many to him. He will be missed.

I remember Nibs from many years ago. Our families were friends and Nibs mother, Annabelle, was a partner in my parents' (Harold and Shullie Eisenberg) business, Windowcraft.

I remember many happy times visiting the Douglas family home and remember Nibs as a funny and kind young man. I remember going out into the field behind their house in Flowing Wells with Nibs where he taught me and my brother Paul how to shoot a shotgun. Nibs father, Walt, taught my father to fly at Freeway airport (formerly Gilpin Airport).

I send my sincere condolences to the family.

He was my tormentor and my mentor. He taught me to run and to fight and to know when to do both.
He was my big brother.

God, take him and love him as I did.

For over twenty years Walter and I shared the ride to Magma Mine from Tucson sharing many good times and some not so good. He was a good friend, a good miner, a good family man. He was generous and quick to help those in need. Condolences to the family. He will be missed but not forgotten.

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Walter Douglas. As a former underground Magma Copper worker i remember him well. He always had a great sense of humor and was very respected by all. I left magma copper in 1985 to join the military. Evan though its been over 22 years since i saw him, he is still remembered as a great guy to be around. In my minds eye of memories i have many many good memories of him. Please accept my sincere condolences.
