Walter Eidson Obituary

EIDSON, Walter J., passed away peacefully on April 25, 2009. He was born on December 8, 1922 in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He was awarded a bachelor's degree from Marquette University and a Master's degree in Library Science from Case Western University, and served in the US Army in World War II. He was a librarian in the Sunnyside Unified School District from 1962-1989, including Liberty and Los Ranchitos elementary schools, and was lovingly referred to as "Uncle Walt" by the students. In 2007, he was inducted into the Sunnyside Hall of Fame for leading the implementation of school libraries in all the District's elementary schools. He also created the "Rock Hound Club" at Sunnyside to give a sense of purpose and self-esteem for boys who struggled with disciplinary issues. Walt had a life-long love of telling stories. After his retirement, he continued story-telling, volunteering at Saguaro National Monument, and performing with the Live Theatre Workshop, where he was Instructor Emeritus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Early Eidson. He is survived by his children, Millicent, Kathy, Jay, and Paula Eidson, son-in-law, Tom Henderson, and grandchildren, Jessica Eidson, Rachael Jereb, Heather Plagens, and Lian Henderson. Services will be Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cyril of Alexandra, 4725 E. Pima St., followed by internment at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery and Mausoleum. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Walter J. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

The most I will miss about my grandfather is him not being able to see me graduate nursing school. I remember when I was about 8 years old he told me that when I grew up that I would have a career helping people. Today I am two years from graduating with my bachelor's of science in nursing. I know my grandfather would be so proud of me and would have loved to see his prophecy come true. However I know he will still see it from heaven.

I had the honor of being involved in a couple productions with Walt for Tucson Parks and Recreation Community Theater and I came to love and admire his warm and giving spirit so much over the years and his desire to always try new things no matter how old you are. He will always be in my heart. I know next Christmas the angels will be enthralled by his telling of "Twas The Night Before Christmas." God bless you, Walt.

"Uncle Walt" was a very special friend of mine for many years at Los Ranchitos Elementary School. I have fond memories of him sharing stories with my first grade students and making them laugh. He was kind, helpful and truly dedicated to the school library profession. Walt was instrumental in encouraging me to go into library service in the late 1980s. For that, I'll be forever grateful.

Walt rarely forgot to send a birthday card. He loved to share his activities such as riding his bike around Holland or acting out a part in a play. He was forever youthful and positive with his friends. Although I had not seen him in several years, he was always been in my thoughts...and always will be.

Walt is the kindest man I have ever known. He accepted that the world was not a perfect place, yet lived each day as if it were. He treated each of us with dignity and respect regardless of our station in life. It is an honor and a privilege to call Walt my friend. "Glory be to God" Walt would always say. "Glory be to God."

"Hickory, dickory, dock,
The mouse ran up the clock,
The clock struck one-
OH! Time for LUNCH!!"

This is one of the many rhymes Uncle Walt recited to my own children as well as the students of Los Ranch. (My kids, who are now grown, remember him fondly.) I worked with Walt there 25 years ago and even after I left to teach at a different school, Walt would come to my classroom dressed in his clown outfit and paint my students' faces and entertain them with stories. My husband and I will always remember this dear man.

Rest in peace Uncle Walter. I have many fond memories of visits to Tucson when we were little, a trip to Disneyland with our families and especially how you would interact with my kids on the kitchen floor. You always made time for everyone. My kids, Chris, Jon and Emily loved your storytelling, especially, "One fine day in the middle of the night".

Each visit to Tucson was an adventure for all who joined in. From trying to find desert owls and even the dreaded ‘jumping cactus’. Year after year you remembered my birthday with a special card and message to me. May God Bless my Uncle Walter. Love your niece and Goddaughter, Bretta

I will never forget sitting on the floor with Great Uncle Walter as he spun his tales for my brothers and me. Later he would help my eldest brother compile a book of these tales. This was a long time ago, but the memory will always hang on. He was my first inspiration to begin my own storytelling. I will miss you terribly Great Uncle Walter...I hope I can do your storytelling justice!

From Walt Eidson's family, we appreciate the thoughts his friends are posting here! It is of great comfort to hear what Dad meant to those he worked with, our cousins and other extended family members, and others whose paths he crossed. He was someone who cared very much about doing a good job with his work, and about the kids in the libraries and storytelling. That pride and dedication definitely influenced all of us kids. Thanks! Fond memories come to me of Uncle Walt's helpful ways at Los Ranchitos. NO ONE could match his story-telling, especially around Halloween! Even when I moved to California in 1990, Walt would write enduring handwritten letters and poems to me. Such a sweet man is surely surrounded and busy story telling in Heaven.

My first job was at Los Ranchitos Elementary in 1975 and Walt was the librarian. At one point I had a small office in the library and got to know Walt much better. The last several years we renewed our friendship at Santa Clara Elementary where he was a substitue and at St Cyril's Church. He always remembered who I was and my name. Walt loved to recall our Los Ranchitos days and made me feel like I was the best teacher in the world.

Walt was a special person. He and I shared "his" library at Los Ranchitos for most of a school year while we waited for Esperanza to be completed, and he never complained about how I did things, or the extra work involved. We continued our friendship way beyond that year, talking at least once a year on the phone in honor of our December birthdays. Thanks, Walt, for all you did for Sunnyside libraries, and for me in particular.

Uncle Walt was a magnificent person. He really cared for people and he made sure you knew that individually. He also imparted nuggets of truth about God. I have been a very fortunate person to have known him. He was my friend.
