Dear Kathy,

Beth and I are so deeply saddened to hear of Michael's passing. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I have so many wonderful memories of time spent with Michael. It's hard to know where to start.
I was the lobbyist for the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association when Michael was active in the association. We spent countless hours at the State Capitol working with lawmakers and regulators on important reforms to oil and gas statutes and regulations. Michael used his considerable legal skills to fashion new language and used his powers of persuasion and Southern wit and charm to gain acceptance of those proposals. After successful adoption of proposed changes, we would invariably head to the nearest BBQ joint for lunch and a few beers, and many many laughs.

We also enjoyed occasional family trips to Wrightsville. Michael introduced us to a whole new level of "beach living." Such generous and gracious hosts were Michael and Kathy. Absolutely some of our family's most wonderful memories.

Michael was truly a good man and had such a great soul. It was an absolute honor to call him a friend.

I am deeply saddened to learn about Michael's passing. Always enjoyed visiting with Michael at the soccer games and he was a good neighborhood as well. I last saw Michael on a flight from Charlotte to Tulsa about 3 years ago and was thankful to know what he was doing. Please accept my sympathy in this time of sorrow.

Dear Kathy,

For years when I drive by the lot where your house used to be across from the Tulsa Tennis Club, I think of you, Michael, Corbett and Kit. In my bedroom I am looking at one of your oil paintings, so you never have been far away from me.

A fond memory that I have of Michael, are the beautiful clothes he wore as a child. He had saved them so Corbett and Kit could also wear them. Michael was a sentimentalist and I am too. Both you and Michael were so gracious and hospitable in the parties I attended in your home.

Please feel my arms wrapped around you and your family.

Love,

Ann Butler

...had the pleasure of meeting and sailing against Michael one evening over at CYC quite a number of years back. Struck up a conversation (which definitely wasn't hard to do with Michael) and came to realize that we shared several common interests, most of which centered around some form of competitive sailing. We shared several similar adventures on larger boats, in a bit more exotic locations, but much of that was back in our respective 'glory days' of sailing. Always enjoyed times when Michael was in town (away from Oklahoma or DC) and we had a chance to tack/gybe and exchange a few stories. The World is a much less colorful place without Michael in it...

During the 3 years we spent together at Wake Forest, Michael was well known for his boundless energy and willingness to lend a hand to a colleague on a moment’s notice. I was so excited to reconnect with him and meet Kathy when my wife and I moved to Wrightsville several years ago. He will be sorely missed.

Mike was an awesome force. He always had a story that he could engage you with and leave you wanting more. Fond memories of sailing offshore (especially on the annual Harvest Moon Regatta) with Mike and celebrating arrival in port listening to beach music and of course, “Bernadette”.
Fair winds and calm seas my friend.

I spent 3 years with Mike during law school. For 2 of those years, we shared a house with John Parker. I am so sorry Mike had dementia, as I to have it as well. Mike was not only a good friend, but he also was a source of endless surprises. I wish I had stayed in closer contact with Mike over the past many years, and I am so saddened to hear of his passing over to the other side. Sail on, my friend.

When remembering Michael, the accompanying picture with his obit is perfect. I can also picture him decked out in a suit, business casual and in oilfield gear complete with mud. The times he was going sailing, or back from sailing or headed to Wrightsville Beach for the summer are the ones I picture when I think of him now. He was a good friend and employer I am grateful to have known him and worked for him. The many stories and people mentioned here I am familiar with and feel like I know as Michael spoke of you often and fondly. Kathy, Corbett and Kit, I am so sorry.

Michael and I were pals and, with Bill Young, flatmates in law school. What a wonderful guy he was! He was very smart and, while he took law school seriously and did well, he never took himself too seriously. He had a great sense of humor and great laugh that he let go easily and often. Oh, the fun we had and resulting stories The picture accompanying the wonderful obit is absolutely perfect - that's the Michael Stovall I knew.

Michael and I did not have frequent contact after law school. I last talked to him in 2018 after he and Kathy had moved to Wrightsville. It was a lengthy chat – weren’t most chats with Michael lengthy? – and we got fully caught up. It was clear that he was deeply devoted to Kathy and the boys, was very proud of Corbett and Kit.

Michael Stovall was for me one of those people that however infrequently we saw or chatted with each other, I nevertheless felt close to him. I’ll miss him.
