Ellen Pence Obituary

Died January 6, 2012, in her home, surrounded by family and close friends. An activist in the housing, anti-war, civil rights and feminist movements, Ellen eventually dedicated her life to ending violence against women, and she enlisted, led, and supported many others in this struggle. In 1975, she became active in the battered women's movement. She moved to Duluth, MN, in 1980, where she and a small group of activists organized the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, commonly referred to as the "Duluth Model." The model, which has been adapted for use throughout the world, employs an interagency approach to shift responsibility for confronting domestic violence from the victims of the violence to the community, based on the idea that women (and their children) have as much right to be safe at home as all people have to be safe on the street. Ellen subsequently worked with a team of experts to redesign the U.S. Marine Corps' response to family violence. She also worked with professionals in the St. Paul criminal justice system to develop a "Blueprint for Safety" for battered women. She was the founder and director of Praxis International, a non-profit dedicated to helping institutions meet the needs of the people they serve. Her unfinished projects include the response of family court in cases of battering and racial disparity in the child welfare system. Ellen integrated grassroots community advocacy and academic research. She earned her B.A. from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. She published extensively on institutional responses to the issue of violence against women and designed the Praxis Safety and Accountability Audit, an ethnological process used to assess the response of community agencies to violence against women and to child abuse. Ellen was preceded in death by her father, Robert Pence; sister, Diane VanValkenburg; and nephew, Jake VanValkenburg. She is survived by her mother, Audrie Anne Marshall Pence of Shoreview, MN; partner, Amanda McCormick, and son, Liam McCormick of St. Paul, MN; godson, Forrest Funmaker of Merrilan, WI; sisters, Carole (Don) Miller of Fridley and Fran (Rick) Myran of Stillwater; brother, David (Candice) Pence of Mankato; and many loving nieces and nephews. Memorial Service at Rauenhorst Ballroom, Coeur De Catherine, St. Catherine University, 2004 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul, MN 2:30-6:00, Jan 14, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (Ellen Pence Memorial Fund), 60 East Plato Blvd., Suite 130, St. Paul, MN, 55107. The fund will provide cash assistance to women who experience violence.

i just googled Ellen Pence and found her obituary. It makes me very, very sad to realize it. She wrote me last year about her "terminal cancer" but I was hopeful, seeing her again giving speeches, like to Nomas (National Organization of men against sexism) this coming summer.
I was just planning to go there to see her again.
in 1991 I was in Duluth and invited DAIP to an International Conference in VIENNA. She and DAIP was very important for my work and the theory of GenderDemocracy.
I would be delighted if anyone could get in contact with me.

Ellen invited me into a small women's community living above the Wesley United Methodist Church in Minneapolis after we were camp counsellors together in 1966. We had not seen each other since those intense and rebellious days, but we shared many of the same activist passions in the same movements over these years. The attached photo has Ellen seated 4th from the left bottom row and I have my arm around her. Our cohort Jan is sitting on the other side of Ellen.
I will plant a nut tree on my farm on Vancouver Island for that wild and creative woman. May all who love and miss her find themselves wrapped in the Peace that passes all understanding! Sunshine Goldsberry (I was Nancy Goldsberry at that time)

My sympathies to all of Ellen's family. I went to school with Ellen. I didn't know her well but I would have to say that even then she was determined. Strangely, she is one of the few names I remember from grade school. Mary Lou

Truly a life well spent! I treasure the chance I had as a HS student watching Ellen facilitate leadership among blue collar families/ homeowners in SE MPLS in their effort to keep their homes and secure low interest loans to fix-up their homes rather than sell to developers. I learned a lot in the 1960-70's from Ellen and my mother about community organizing and building power. Ellen was a powerhouse on the basketball court as well!

My sympathies to Ellen's family. I first met Ellen when she was the speaker & auctioneer at the Angel Auction benefit hosted at Holy Name of Jesus to raise funds for Home Free, a domestic abuse shelter. She was one special lady & gave so much to so many, as did Diane. They are reunited in Christ's love but they will be missed by many. I offer my prayers to you all.

I'm sorry to hear of Ellen's passing altho some years ago she said ~ when I said she should slow down ~ "I have to do as much as I can while I still can", with a smile on her face. My condolences to the family. Anne Marshall, you know i will never forget you. I hope you are well. Peace to all.

Our hearts go out the Ellen's family and friends. Although we did not know Ellen personally, we knew of her life and wonderful contributions through her loving sister Carole.

January 11, 2012

my sister Maradee Hyland was a good friend of Ellen's at St. Margarets back in 1964-1966. I remember her as being a strongly opinionated passionate person.. She did a lot with her life and lived with the intent that I knew she would.

Ellen, I learned so much from you over the years. You are one of the most brilliant, honest, funny, witty, down to Earth people I have EVER KNOWN. I thank you for employing me, loving me as a friend, loving my children and being Porsche's first employer_she tells everyone about your lessons to her on hard work and education. Oh yea, she graduated from St. Scholastica this past Spring and is in grad school_you played a part in those decisions for her. When I last saw you and you told me that you were sick, I forgot about it because I didn't want to accept it, then I saw your picture on our front page saying that you were gone_my heart sank. I am so happy that when we parted that day that we hugged and I told you that I loved you! Anne, Amanda, and Liam and family, you are in our prayers. We love you! Yvette Farrow.
