I didn't know him well. Hell, I didn't even know his last name before today. But he was kind, and despite the crappy hand he was dealt, he had a smile on his face every time I saw him. He was one of our regulars at work, and I would always take the time to chat with him every time he came in. He made it more than a year past his diagnosis date, which made him luckier than about 98% of other pancreatic cancer patients, and I'm grateful that I got a few extra months to chat with him. I never got a chance to ask him where all his best fishing spots were on White Bear Lake. Maybe it's better that way.
He was a good man. It's sad knowing that I'll never see him again.

I will not forget day Jeff came to Ramsey High School. He was the Stud hockey player! Many of us gals had a crush on him. He was rugged but also had a sweet shy side. I am sorry for his family to lose such a great young man. Taken much to early. I imagine Jeff fishing in Heaven and Coaching Hockey!
We will miss you Jeff!

Warmly, Julie Kruse class of 79

Jeff, you will always be Mr. Hospitality to me--touching so many lives,... Your simple life to me was a "spiritual" choice. I feel blessed to have had you in my life, joann

I got to know Jeff at first because of our mutual love for dogs. Our paths crossed all the time in Birchwood and I enjoyed many spirited conversations with him on a huge variety of subjects. Jeff eventually convinced me to strap the skates on again to play a season with the Vulcans a couple years ago even though I hadn't played competitively in decades. He was incredibly supportive and we had a lot of laughs. Coaching and playing for the Eastside Vulcans meant a lot to him and his unique form of leadership was one of the things that really drew the team together and created a lot of good times. Stories will be told for years to come I'm quite sure.

My walks in Birchwood with my dog will not be the same without crossing paths with Jeff. His challenges in the past year and a half were handled with incredible grace and dignity. He was a very special person and I'm better for knowing him. Rest in peace buddy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jeff's family and friends.
I met Jeff about 20 years ago when he moved to Birchwood. We live across from Jeff's home and truly enjoyed him as a neighbor and friend.
Jeff and I had bumps in our relationship due to his bark and no bite personality.
If you new Jeff well you know he always had a good heart.
I know he had a huge impacted on many young people to learn baseball and hockey.
His love of sports had to rub off to all he touched.
Jeff and I had a love for fishing. We spent many days together chasing muskies on White Bear Lake. Jeff caught many Muskie in my boat. Jeff had many lures however there was only on color he used- char truce .
The last time l fished with Jeff was in June. He was having a good day however he did let me know that we could not catch crappies with out minnows. We caught lots of crappies on artificial baits however Jeff let me know we Could have caught more. He was was right and a better fisherman.
I Truly miss Jeff and all his love of life.

Your friends
Ron, and Kathy Malles

I met Jeff senior year at Ramsey High School. We became friends instantly. Jeff had an infectious laugh and was quick to tease. Loving all sports he was at his best when compatition was at hand.
Life took us in different directions and I lost touch with Jeff, but I often thought of him when I picked up a football or played softball wich is just two of the sport that everyone who hung out with Jeff did with him. You had to play because he would coach you with out you knowing you were being coached.
I regret not reconnecting with jeff. I'm sure we would had great fun together again.
Rest in peace brother.

To the Lutz family, please accept my deepest sympathies on Jeff's passing. I have so many great memories of Jeff during our time together at St. Thomas Academy. It was great to reconnect with him years later and have the opportunity to play hockey alongside him on a couple of the many incarnations of his beloved Eastside Vulcans. I am so grateful that Jeff was feeling well enough to join us for the Wisconsin fishing Opener, Jeff was in rare form and really hit it off with my dad and my son. I know how hard Jeff fought over the last year and a half and the only solace I can take from his passing is that he is finally free of the pain. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Jeff was a great friend and a wonderful human being.

There was only one Lutzer.

One of the things I loved about the Duke, was that he still believed that he could "help" me, at age 60, become a better player, and a better team-mate. He was truly one of a kind. It's amazing to think that he was still playing hockey about a month ago. He loved hockey.

I first met the Duke in 2004. I was asked to play in a hockey tournament, in of all places, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He had guys from the Cities, from the Range, the East Coast, and California. After one game, I asked one of his buddies, "What's up with this guy?". He was yelling at the refs, at the other team, and at his own guys! His buddy just shrugged and said, "What can I say? I know how he is. But he's my friend."

I am proud to have had Jeff for my friend for the last 12 years. Somehow, he ended up living down the street from me in Birchwood Village.

I'm sad because he's gone, and I will miss him. But I am praying that, and I believe he has, found peace now.

We want to extend our sympathy to Diane, Barb and Tom on the loss of your son and brother. We lived next door to the Lutz's in Roseville. Our younger son had Jeff on a pedestal for his athletic ability. Jeff always took the time to play with John. They played hockey in the driveway and Jeff would let younger John play with the big boys when the team played on the pond. Also baseball in the back yard. I'm sure you will be missed and all will have many good memories. Now he is in a good place,no more pain as he rests in the arms of the Lord. God Bless you in the days ahead as you morn his loss.

I knew Jeff from the East Side Vulcans. One day a couple years ago he came into the locker room clean shaven after having a full beard. Guys were giving him grief over it kidding him if he had a court appearance coming up. Jeff"s answer was that he had a funeral coming up and he wanted the deceased mom to recognize him. I respect that kind of integrity very much.

Jeff Lutz was a super guy with great attitude. Loved life and participating in many activities especially hockey and fishing. Irreplaceable leader of the East side Vulcans hockey team. We all had a better experience with Jeff leading the way. A great life taken way too soon. You will be missed Lutzer !

Growing up next door to the Lutz's in Roseville... Jeff was 7 years older than me and my sports idol growing up (hockey and baseball). Those were good times whether we were playing hockey in the driveway (or across the street on the pond) or baseball in the back yard. Jeff even built his own pitching mound in the backyard one summer. Later is life, Jeff and I reconnected playing 35+ baseball and hockey together. Still the same old Jeff!
Thanks for the fun times. I will miss you!
