Mr. Diffley made an amazing (and lasting) impact on his students. Just last week I was telling someone a story about his teaching methods and my experience as a student in his classroom. That was 45 years ago. Still talking about him.
Sad that he's been gone 9 years. That said, he's in Eternal Spirit and hopefully loving it!

Condolences to the Diffley family. You surely know that anyone who went to St. John's events in the 1960's or worked at Glacier at St. Mary's in those same years, when Tom was there and singing away, realize that even those who know him most from then, found grand appreciation for him. My husband and I attended the 40 year Anniversary for those who worked at St. Mary's in Glacier and even my husband remembers your husband, father and grandfather's liveliness.
Prayerfully,
Mary Pat Ferron Canes

Mr. Diffley was my favorite high school teacher (and the favorite of many). Sorry to hear of his passing. Condolences to the family.
My wife (who never met him) and I still quote him, "Word-pow-pow-POWER!"
His memory lives on through his students, friends and family.

Dear Kathy, 7-14-16
After the initial shock of hearing of Tom's passing, I realized that Tom's love of life and literature did not pass away. They are spread like the gospel seed into his family, friends and students --and then to their descendants.
I still tell my friends about him, years after he'd entertain me with his hilarious original stories of The Quister and Johnny Rivers Chokes in Concert. Tom was the only one I knew who still would shout Hoo-Haa! from the 1950's Mad Magazine satires. Of all the listeners, only I believed him sane at the time, as I shouted the same thing.
Anyone who ever knew Tom will miss him. I hope that you'll be consoled a little to know that men like Tom never really die. I even put a little of Tom's spirit into Kirk in my story American Hearts. But Tom was one of a kind, and not fictional.
To paraphrase W.H.Auden: Earth receive an honored guest,
Thomas Diffley laid to rest.
My prayers and all best wishes and sympathy, Kathy.
Sincerely,
Ed Vogt

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of " MR Diffley". I haven't heard the name in over 30 years. I'm a 1984 graduate of Irondale H.S. My wife is a 1982 graduate of Irondale. I don't recall if he was one of my teachers, but I'd heard his name many times around the school. From what I do recall, he was well liked. I'm sorry to hear his name again under the circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. God bless... John and Brenda Sullivan.

So saddened to learn of Mr. Diffley's passing. He was my teacher during my senior year (1969-'70) at LaCrescent High School. He was an excellent teacher and had a very caring person with a keen interest in his students and their plans for the future. The following year, I left to attend the University of Minnesota as a Journalism Major after spending the summer of 1970 with a part-time job in Advertising Sales at the Houston County News. Although I have not seen him since the early 1970's I will always remember his love of hockey. He single-handedly created an interest in the community that years later resulted in building an ice arena and forming a team. You must remember that in the deep SouthEast corner of the state and bordering Wisconsin, if a topic didn't have anything to do with The Packers and football, it didn't have much chance to be practiced. Most of us in that part of the world had never seen a live hockey game; nor had we participated in even a recreational game. When I got to the University, I immediately discovered what the hockey craze was all about. But like many others, we owe that interest to Tom Diffley who lit the candle as far as hockey goes in SE Minnesota. Many fond memories and my deepest sympathy to his family.

My deepest sympathies to the Diffley Family. Our teaching years at Irondale were precious. Tom was the consummate educator. Anyone who could entice my students to cut my class to attend his Poetry class deserves the highest praise!I'll cherish the memories,

Dear family of Tom Diffley,
Words can't begin to express how sorry I was to read Tom's obituary in the paper. I am so sorry for his loss. I always looked forward to seeing Tom and the rest of the Diffley family in the dental office I worked in. Dr. Ager was one of Tom's best friends and I always enjoyed stories about his children and grand children and his travels with Steve and Mary. I have great memories of him and I know memories will keep him alive through all of our hearts. My deepest sympathy to the whole family.
Love,
Dawn Reichel

My deep sympathies to Mr. Diffley's family and friend. Mr. Diffley was one of my teachers at Irondale - I haven't seen him for over 40 years, but well remember him. Everyone loved him - such a lively, cheerful man and a very good teacher. Sounds like he had a life well lived and was well loved- can't ask for anything more than that in this life.

The start or a beautiful day at Glacier Park; my family and I camped at Johnson's Campground. Lucky Black and son Huey asleep in a tent at our site. The morning alarm clock was Tom and Steve Berg calling a wake up for us all. What a great surprise. What a grand morning!
