Roger Bates Obituary

WARNER -- Roger T. "Pete" Bates died peacefully at home, July 2, 2010, after a long illness, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Springfield. Mass.

He moved to East Concord as a child and then to Warner where he graduated from Simonds Free High School in 1944.

He started a career with Weaver Bothers Construction that lasted 55 years, working in all corners of the state of New Hampshire, first as an equipment operator and eventually as part owner of the company. The completion of the Kancamagus Highway was one of his favorite accomplishments.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Snowmobiling and trail grooming were some of his great pastimes in the winter.

IN HIS LIFE: In the summer he loved to watch his grandson, Adam, race stockcars. He was predeceased by his brother, Jack Bates, and his sister, Marjorie Gatherum. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia O. (Messer) Bates; three sons, Peter H. Bates and his wife Ginny (Herrick) Bates, Mark E. Bates and Jeffrey R. Papa,

I don't even know where to begin. So I guess I will start by saying I love you so much. We never said that enough. I couldn't have asked for a better Grandfather than you.
Many memories have been going through my head over the last few days, but there are two that stand out. I would like to share these with you know. I think I was around 11 and you and Gram took Jason, Adam, and I up to the White Mountains . We went to Cannon, saw the Old Man, but what I remember most from that day was going on the Hobo railroad. You knew the Engineer so we got to ride up front with him. That was such a great experience. The other memory that sticks out is when you and Gram came down to North Carolina to visit me. I was so proud to show you around and take you on a race shop tour.
I'm so glad I was able to share the last 7 months with you.
I miss you so much.

Love Your Granddaughter,
Jessica

Pete, You are missed beyond anything I can write here. As a kid in the late 50s and early 60s I hunted with you and your Father along with my Father John L. and brother John S. among others. I know Dad thought of you as his best friend, I hope the two of you meet again.
Take care my friend, Bill & brother John S.Jewell, Warner boys. ....

We offer our deepest sympathy. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life. Never was it his purpose for our human lives to be taken away. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Psalm 147:3
