Mr. Robert M. Bob Mercurio, 46, died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident while on a business trip in Henniker, NH, on Thursday, September 24, 2009. Robert was born in Utica, NY, December 21, 1962, a son of Lawrence F. Mercurio and the late Jean Marie (Paravati) Mercurio. Mr. Mercurio was employed as a District Sales Engineer for the Danaher Corporation, a Linear Motion Company. Bobs life revolved around his family and his community. Bob was a dear friend of mine from New Hartford High, Class of '81. I have wonderful memories of spending years with Bob doing so many fun things together including marching band and all the great trips and places it took us to. Word of his passing, while incredibly sad and untimely, has allowed me time to reflect back on what a great person and true friend Bob really was. While we have not kept in touch much since high school, I am not surprised to hear about how close & committed Bob was to his family and his passion & involvement for the youth of his community. Thoughts & prayers to Bob's family...God Bless.

The loss of a guy like Bob can't be measured or expressed. I first met Bob about 14 years ago when we made sales calls together. Over the years, we had gotten to know each other well and I always enjoyed his visits to our office. At our company golf outing two years ago, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Bob on the course, although he skipped dinner to get home to attend a family function with his kids, as was typical of his dedication to his family, especially to his children. (And, Bob...I'm sorry about the bogey...it was my fault...you know the one I'm talking about.) He will be missed greatly!

Pat and Family Terese and I are deeply saddened by this news of Bob. I will remember Bob as always laughing and smiling. I had the blessing of sitting next to you Pat and across from Bob while we worked in Chicago Pneumatics Customer Service Department. Those long days there were made shorter and more fun by Bobs presents there. Bob and I always went to lunch at the same time and would talk about the NJ Devils AHL team he loved to go to those games. I still remember seeing him wearing his Jersey there. Although it was for a brief part of my life Bob is one of those special people you remember like it was yesterday. I will always remember him as very positive attitude, smiling, laughing and most of all a friend. Pat I pray for you and your family that God Blesses you and comforts you at this time. God Bless Phil Valeriano

Bob was a goalie on the New Hartford midget hockey team that I coached in 1977-78. He was a "team player," respected and well-liked by his coaches and teammates for his work ethic, his keen sense of sportsmanship, and his warm, engaging personality. He got along well with everyone he met, and he was a gentleman on and off the ice.

As I have followed the Observer-Dispatch on the Internet in recent years, I was not surprised to learn about Bob's own coaching pursuits because he had what it takes to relate well to children and their parents. The sheer breadth of his coaching -- with so many children in such a variety of sports -- made it clear that community service was a labor of love marked by genuine devotion. He performed above and beyond any reasonable call of duty.

The Observer-Dispatch's headline reporting the New Hampshire accident told the story well: "Beloved Coach." A victory more enduring than anything a scoreboard could ever say.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” -- Henry Brooks Adams

Coaches are teachers in every sense of the word, and Bob's legacy will be his own family and the many other children whose lives he touched for the better.
