Sophie was born on September 11, 1928, to Herman and Sophia Baylor of Mohawk, where she graduated, and then attended the Utica School of Commerce. Sophie had an aptitude for accounting and became an excellent secretary, carrying her shorthand skills well into her adult life. On February 17, 1951, she married Sherrill Paul Hopper, also from Mohawk. Sophie and Paul raised 10 children at their home on Canadarago Lake, Richfield Springs. She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy and Dan Brooks, Johnson City, NY, Heidi Davis, Wilmington, NC, and Susan and Rick Randazzo, Ilion, NY; and her sons, Ted Hopper and his wife, Connie Lake, Stafford Springs, CT, John Hopper, Voorheesville, NY, Herman and Carolyn Hopper, Richfield Springs, NY, Christopher and Dianna Hopper, Ashland, MA, and David and Dawn Hopper, Voorheesville, NY. She was predeceased by her son, Kevin Hopper; her brothers, Donald and Albert Baylor; and her sisters, Kathleen "Chick" Phillips and Adelaide Wollaber, all from Mohawk, NY. Her husband, Paul, was a respected meatcutter for years at the Victory Market in Richfield Springs. He went to be with the Lord in May of 1992. Sophie's surviving siblings include Jean Hyde and Patti Cook, Mohawk, NY, Theresa Marko, Herkimer, NY, and Richard Baylor, Paines Hollow, NY. Sophie had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will remember her as a loving woman who enjoyed fishing, swimming and baseball. Sophie loved paddling her canoe and shared her passions with all of her grandchildren. A private graveside service is scheduled for October 19, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Richfield Springs Cemetery, followed by a gathering for her siblings and immediate family at the Vet's Club on Lake Street in Richfield Springs. Condolences and correspondence can be sent to Mrs. Dorothy Brooks, 815 Town Line Rd., Johnston City, NY 13790 or Susan Randazzo, 216 Avery Rd., Ilion, NY 13357.

Susan, Patrick, David, Heidi, Herman, John, Dorothy, Chris, Ted and families,
I am so very sorry for your loss; your Mom was an amazing lady and I know you will all miss her very much. It was a pleasure growing up in the same 'neighborhood' with you all and she never seemed to blink an eye that one or all four of us Gonyea kids would be in the house or for dinner with you all...she treated all of us the same as if we were her own. And when ever we were back in town it was nice to see her and catch up. I always thought it kind of neat that we had a 'family connection' as well with her brother, (Great) Uncle Herman Baylor, being our Grandmother Gladys Bennett's brother-in-law. May God grant you all peace at this time.
With Deep Sympathy and Love,
Jeanne (Gonyea) White

My condolences to the bereaved family and friends. May you rejoice in the Most High, who is our helper, especially in times like this. (Psalm 70:4,5)

Our sympathies to the family. The Baylor women are incredible and they all passed that on to their children. Bless you all.
Love, Patti Ann Rich (Phillips)
