Robert Henry Hynds Robert Henry Hynds was born in Van Alstyne, Texas on July 20, 1925, to parents Helen and Henry D. Hynds. He loved his hometown and the wonderful memories of his youth. Helping his grandfather on the farm with his brother John Hynds was one of the great joys of life. Robert graduated Van Alstyne High School in 1942 and began his college studies at Texas A&M. His time in College Station was interrupted by WWII. At the age of 18 he answered his country's call of duty to military service. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in July of 1943. He was assigned to the 43rd Division, F Company, 172nd Regiment. He served in the Pacific Theater and was part of the famous assault on the island of Luzon. Robert was wounded on two separate occasions and received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. After the surrender of Japan, Robert became part of the occupying force until his discharge in 1946. He returned home to complete his college education. He followed his friends Dick Walker and Jack Strickland to Austin and enrolled at the University of Texas. While he only stayed there one semester, he and 19 fellow students helped to start the University Christian Church. The church is still there serving the Lord to this day. He then followed his heart West to Texas Tech University where he completed his studies and earned his degree in Business and Finance. Robert returned to Van Alstyne and married Uldine Haynes. He began his banking career with the First National Bank of Van Alstyne. He became President and CEO and later Chairman of the Board of the bank. Robert worked for the bank for 78 years and many of those years he worked alongside his wife Uldine who was also a long tenured employee of the bank. After his retirement from the day to day operations at the bank he became a valued, trusted, and wise voice as he continued to serve on the board as a director. Robert served on numerous local boards and committees in Van Alstyne and Grayson County. He called hundreds of people year after year on their birthday passing out heartfelt good wishes. He is best known for his kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness. He was courageous, principled, and loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Van Alstyne, the oldest Christian Church in Texas, where he served as an elder and was a faithful attending member until his last days. "Is there anything I can do for you?" was an iconic saying of Robert Hynds. He is survived by his sister Jane Robertson, daughter in law Linda Hynds, granddaughter Melanie Jones, great granddaughter Heather Turner and husband Billy, Hillary Jones, Alex Jones and great great granddaughters Skylar and Sage Turner. He is also survived by nieces Statia Fourrier, Sarah Janis Thorn, Cathy Stroud, Barby Johnson, Jennifer Gorman, Marnie Norris, Kay Stuart and nephew Bill Benton and many great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Uldine Hynds, son Michael Hynds, daughter Tohnie Hynds Berry and son-in-law Dr. Jim Berry. The family gives great thanks to Jackie Hampton, Kitty Alexander and Dora White for the wonderful care and devotion they showed to Robert over these past many years.
