Casey Austin Rice died suddenly Wednesday, July 30, at home in Berkeley, CA. He was 33 years old.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Ventura VFW Hall, 3801 Market St.
Casey was born to Max and Jo Amy Rice in Ventura, CA, in 1981. He attended public schools including Buena High School where he was active in the Theater Department. Casey also graduated from Ventura Community College before transferring to UC Berkeley in 2006.
During high school and college, Casey worked at a variety of coffee shops. That's where he honed his love for caf culture, coffee and good conversations.
In Berkeley, Casey worked as a waiter and most recently as a call center lead for a communications firm.
Casey loved Berkeley for its flea markets, food and curb-find ethos. He also enjoyed exploring the wider world through the Internet. Among his other hobbies were sailing and shooting. Food was a passion. He was a great cook and loved good food. Casey was a conversationalist, a deep thinker and a lover of knowledge. Amongst his friends and acquaintances he was renowned for his ability to quote random facts on almost any subject. He was a connoisseur of the Internet and was always excited to share his latest finds -- whether they be videos explaining physics concepts or Japanese cooking shows.
He will be deeply missed and remembered for his quick wit, his kind heart and his capacity to talk endlessly on any subject.
Casey was preceded in death by his father Max. He is survived by his mother JoAmy of Ventura, his sister McKenzee Rice, brother-in-law Geraldo Obach, and niece Shelby Obach of Orange County, CA, his grandfather Amos Vredenburg of Powell, WY, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

I am overwhelmed with sadness and grief to know my buddy Casey is now gone. I have never encountered a co-worker before that was so outgoing, hardworking, giving, funny, smart and most of all interested in life and everything in it. Many conversations on Mexican, Japanese, Indian, Salvadoran, Italian and and organic food, chemistry, politics, Berkeley, sailing...the list goes on-will be missed.
My friend Casey: I love you and look forward to seeing you in the afterlife. My condolences to your family. May the grace of God be with you.

Casey and I worked together for several years at the call center. We were friends and co workers. Casey was such a great guy. He would always make me laugh or smile. He was patient with callers and the agents he supeervised. I could count on him to help out when needed and stay over his scheduked shift if needed. I will miss you. Rest in peace Casey. Casey- there's a huge chunk of my heart with your name carved on it. My memories of time with you are what define the feeling of teenage girl excitement and wonder in my mind. Everything we did together felt like we were getting away with something big. Sitting outside your car on the roof of the parking structure, staring out at the ocean and talking for hours on end without ever running out of things to talk about (mostly because you would have a story to tell about everything)- until we'd lose track of time and have my Mom ready to call the cops because I'd broken curfew again. To this day, my favorite smell in the world is Pomade (fresh donuts), old spice, and tobacco smoke- it's what hugs smell like to me- specifically, Casey hugs, which set the running standard for everything a hug should be.

Funny, generous, intelligent, and kind, that is how I remember Casey from Buena High School. Always a down-to-earth, loving individual, Casey introduced me to Ventura when we were just kids. Peace be with him and his loved ones.

Casey, although it has been some years since we have seen each other, the friends I made at Rocket Fuel will remain the dearest friends I ever made, you were one of them. It hurts to see someone so young called to God so early in their life. Blessings to your loved ones grieving for you now.

I knew Casey since our junior high theatre performance days. He was always such a friendly guy with a great sense of humor. He was his own person and I admire him for that! He will be missed and never forgotten.
