James Chambers Obituary

Dr. James David Chambers, Jr., passed away, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at St. John's Regional Medical Center.

He was born on May 17, 1923, in Baltimore. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving his country in both the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy for 25 years. After the military, he worked for General Motors Delco Corp. for 20 years and later Laidlaw and the Oxnard School District until finally retiring in 2003.

He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Mae Murphy, and shared his love and life with his treasured wife and teammate for 64 years. To this union was born three children, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and heaven only knows the number of spiritual children who loved him as "Pappas" and were touched by his teaching, preaching and love for the truth of God's word.

He gave his life to Christ at an early age and recommitted his walk with the Lord while on tour of duty in Japan, never turning back. He had been a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church for 43 years. In 1967, responding to God's call, he was licensed into ministry and then ordained in 1977 under Rev. Hosea Edwards. He served faithfully as assistant pastor to Bishop B.A. Huggins for the past 17 years, and received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the St. Paul Baptist Church Seminary and Bible Institute in July 2007.

He served as executive secretary of the Progressive Baptist State Convention and was a member of the monthly men's fellowship and Bible study held at St. John's Lutheran Church. One of the greatest loves of his ministry was his longstanding Tuesday morning, Through-The-Bible, interactive study that he taught.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Dorothy, children, Brenda and Harold Turner, James and Pauline Chambers, Eddie and Terry Chambers; brothers, Charles and wife Agnes Chambers and Evans Chambers; sisters, Irene (deceased husband Wilbur Hood) and Angie and husband Robert McCullum; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

"Well done, God's good and faithful servant." —Matthew 25:21

Visitation will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. today, Sept. 14, at Garcia Mortuary. Funeral service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Baptist Church, 1777 Statham Blvd., in Oxnard. Interment will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.

Rev. Chambers has blessed so many through his knowledge of God's word. While growing up at St. Paul he always made sure that we as youth were on the right path. As an adult we went through the bible from beginning to end with a trivia question after each session at his Friday night bible study. I thank God for placing him into my life. Mother Chambers please know that we love you dearly. The many words of encouragement that you both have shared with me and my family throuhout the years has kept us strong. Now we encourage you.

Sister Chambers, our profound love and prayers covet you and family. Rev. Chambers had a gift and passion for teaching God’s word. One of his favorite statements was: “LET ME SHARE THIS WITH YOU” He always shared God’s word. Remember earth hath no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. Our deepest sympathy.

I spent many Friday nights as a child in Dr. Chamber's bible studay. He was sent by God to impart his wisdom and he willingly shared his God given gift. His voice always commanded respect and authority,at the same time filled with love and compassion.

He will be missed but there's comfort in knowing he's at peace and he's with God.
