Lamora Magdaleno Obituary

Lamora Magdaleno

Camarillo, CA

Born September 19, 1917, in Monterey CA to Ray Garner and Nella Hollenbeck Garner. She peacefully passed away June 10, 2015, in Camarillo after a short illness. Lamora met life's challenges with grace, courage and humor and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was married to Edward Magdaleno for 55 years until his passing in 1992. They raised their three children in Los Angeles where she worked for the L.A. School District. After moving to Port Hueneme in 1968, she worked for the Oxnard School District as an office manager and later as a librarian.

In retirement she volunteered at the Port Hueneme library for over 35 years and was a founder and office holder for the Friends of the Library. She also pursued her interests in art and genealogy and became an accomplished watercolorist. She had known that her grandmother was born in California in 1864 but did not know much more that that. After several years of research she compiled a large detailed family genealogy tracing some of her ancestors in America back to the 1630s in New York and Connecticut. She compiled many books on various family lines to share with her family and several distant cousins she met through her research. The vast amount of records she worked with led her to buy an Osborn computer in the early days of PC use. Up until early this year she was still using a computer for email and to surf the web.

As a child she attended 17 different schools as her dad changed jobs often during the Depression. She said she didn't like it, but I think she learned to make friends easily. She was liked by everyone who met her. She had friends throughout the U.S. due to her genealogy trips and correspondence.

She lived in her own house till January and then moved into Atria Las Posas which she liked very much. After being in the hospital she moved to Mali's place where ProCare provided hospice care. We wish to thank them for their kind help.

She is survived by two sons, Raymond and Alex and his wife Elma, five grandsons, six great grandchildren. A daughter Marla passed away in 2014.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Center for Spiritual Living at 340 Mobil Avenue, Camarillo at 11:00 AM Saturday July 18th.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Port Hueneme Friends of the Library.

Lamora & Ruth: Ruth's Birthday Party-2011

Lamora was a great friend whose kindness and wisdom I carry inside my heart. We started playing Scrabble, and little did I know that I would make a friend who helped me deal with the death of a friend, who became a example of how to live life, and who on more than one occasion dazzled me with the breadth of her knowledge on so many subjects. There was a lot of laughter and banter over Scrabble and just about anything else. And she loved her family fiercely and was a true friend.

Lamora's husband was my mother's first cousin. tho we never meant she was very helpful when I contacted her. My only regret was not meeting her before she passed on. She was so instrumental in gathering family history.
I want to send my Condolences to the family and families of Lamora. I'm sure its been a great loss to them.
our love and prayers go out to you as well.

What a great encourager to all us kids. Always reminding us of our gifted ness and good habits. Never said a word when Al and I would smother peanut butter and raw honey on a slice of bread and zoom out the back door.

We will all miss you Lamora, you were a good mother to all the "Berendo" kids. As with most mothers many of your accomplishments have gone unsung. The little day to day efforts and struggles of child raising were where you shown. Thanks for the many birthday parties thrown and for the many trips to the movies and other events that you drove us to and for the consolation and first aid you gave us when we bumped or scraped a knee. Also thanks for being friend and good neighbor to all our mothers. I remember in particular the "Hen Parties" that were held in each other's homes where the knitting, crocheting and tidbits of gossip and experience were shared.
