Larry Weiss Obituary

Long time, Ventura Music Man, Lawrence Warren Weiss passed away peacefully in his sleep early Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, morning after a five year journey with Alzheimer's. He was 81. Born in Chicago, lll., November 8, 1931, Larry grew up amidst the challenges of the Great Depression and WWII as the only child of devoted parents, Sophie and Harry Weiss, of blessed memory. Though often unable to pay the rent, Larry's mother, having immigrated from Russia as a teen, insisted on music lessons for her son. Though his early efforts at trumpeting were marked by slow progress and frustration, Larry pressed on with a remarkable discipline and dedication that would become the hallmark of his approach to living a rich and accomplished life. Soon, Larry and his horn rose to tremendous professional heights, playing as a guest soloist with both the Chicago Symphony and the NY Metropolitan Opera by the time he was 18. Turning down an invitation to join the President's Marine Band, Weiss chose instead a path more conducive to settling down and raising a family. Marrying his high school sweetheart, the late and beloved Doris Jean Cohn, Larry served in the U.S. Army's 5th Armored Division Band, at Fort Smith, Ark., before heading to California to launch his career as a music teacher.

After a few years at Shafter High School, Weiss settled in Ventura, where he would raise his family and spend the rest of his life. As Music Director and Teacher at Ventura High School from 1961 to 1993 and Conductor of the Ventura County Concert Band from 1974 to 2008, Weiss spent nearly half a century gifting Venturans with music. Conducting multiple bands, orchestras, choirs and specialty groups, and giving private lessons, Larry taught music to thousands and instilled a love of the art in many more. Through it all, he kept up his lip and love of playing as Principal Trumpet with the Ventura County Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, Cabrillo Music Theatre, and many other professional ensembles. After years of recognition for his contributions to the musical arts, from local, state and national leaders, the Ventura Unified School District, in 2009, placed a permanent bronze tribute to him in VHS Auditorium that was for many years his second home.

Larry was also an avid biker, walker, swimmer, world traveler, and lover of wildlife and nature. He was a constant student of history and proud member of the Toastmasters. He was respected and admired by a city of friends, enjoying close relationships dating back to his earliest childhood. But of all his varied and amazing accomplishments, it was clearly his role as beloved husband, father and grandfather that he relished the most. He is survived by his five children: Scott (Eva) Weiss, Robert (Kristy) Weiss, David (Eliana) Weiss, Susan (Stuart Heller) and Steven (Andrea) Weiss; as well as 11 grandchildren: Brandon, Tammy, Michael, Lea, Jacob, Samuel, Eli, Andrew, Matthew, Channah and Sam; as well as three great-grand children; and his 107 year old mother-in-law, Ida Cohn of Westlake Village.

Memorial Services will be held Monday, February 25, 2013, at Temple Beth Torah in Ventura (7620 Foothill Road, 93004) at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ventura High School Band Boosters to provide private music lessons for underprivileged youth. Checks can be mailed to: VHS Music Boosters, PO Box 3051, Ventura, Calif. 93006. Please indicate "Larry Weiss Scholarship Fund" on your contribution.

Thoughts and prayers to Mr Weiss's family. I had him in a couple classes. I was never in band, I think I had him for history and drivers Ed. He was truly one of my better instructors, he had to be, because I usually slept through history and I didn't in his class. Over 20 years later and I still remember him. Rest in peace and feel accomplished! -Class of 89

My prayers go out to all of the family and friends of Mr. Weiss. Mr. Weiss had so much passion for music that left a huge impression on everyone he came into contact with. I enjoyed my years in the concert, marching & pep band. I can still recall during the marching band days Mr. Weiss would say: "Horton - Guide Right". It was a pleasure to be one of his many students, and in the later years when we would run into each other out in town, Mr. Weiss would still remember my name. He will be long remembered. Mr. Weiss will always hold a very special place in my heart...three years as part of the "family" that was choir at VHS, as well as the wonderful music he gave us through the Concert Band. Thank you, Weiss Family, for bringing us all a little closer by sharing your personal thoughts with us at the service. It was truly lovely and a wonderful tribute.

Dear Weiss children,

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this challenging time. What a tallented man your father was. The thing I remember the most about Larry is how engaged in conversation he was whenever I talked with him. He truly made you feel that he was interested in what you had to say, no matter how trivial. How blessed this world was to have him!

I extend my love and prayers to all of you!

He was my High School Marching Band, Concert Band & Choir director from 76 to 79: I played in the VCCB for over 14 years under his directorship, Larry taught me how to sing properly, how to enunciate the words when you sing so that people can understand the words.... I just cant begin to say how much he taught me about music, how to interpret it and how to feel the music weather when I was playing the baritone horn or singing, Thank you, thank you Larry...you differently will and are missed...R.I.P. my friend.

From my first trumpet lesson with Mr Weiss to the honor I had playing in the trumpet section of the Ventura County Symphony with him, I constantly learned about music and the qualities of a professional musician. I am forever grateful for my studies with Mr Weiss, those lessons are still with me today. Thank you.
May God bless you and your family at this time.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the Weiss family.Your father was one of only a hand full of teachers in my life at VHS that I can remember and he really made an inpact on me.He was not only a wonderful U.S .History teacher who could keep the class involved in the lesson( which is really hard to do at times)but he was an example of a true gentalman.I was new to VHS and to see this man who was kind and friendly and he rode his bike to class was an examlpe of someone filled with joy and love of life.I enjoyed seeing him on his bike on my way to school,it ment to me to remember the simpel things in life. May the sweet memories of his time with us all help you trough these times of loss.

Thank you, Mr. Weiss, for forcing me to memorize the circle of 5ths. It has served me well. As a music educator myself, I have often thought back to my time as the accompanist of the Ventura High School choir and the endless patience Mr. Weiss showed his students. We need more teachers like him to continue keeping music an important part of a well rounded education.

My condolences to Mr. Weiss' family. I had the opportunity to play clarinet under the baton of Mr. Weiss as a member of the Santa Paula High School chosen to play in High School Honor Band in 1970, and again in the early 90's in the Ventura Co. Concert Band, which I joined specifically because Mr. Weiss was the conductor. I'll never forget either experience and the man waving the baton.

To the Sons the Daughter, Susan, and the whole Family of our dear Larry Weiss,

I was very saddened reading the Star's Obits, the other day, learning of our dear Larry's home going.

Asides from getting to know Larry, over the years, as a conductor, I had many chats with him when he first entered the Ventura Town-House. That is when I was introduced to Scott, his brothers and sister Susan as well as her husband.

Susan had spotted me, not long ago, at our famous Trader Joe's on Telegraph Rd.; we had a nice chat, just enough time to hash a few things over.

Regretfully I am unable to attend the Monday services. I would have loved to give Larry this personal final moment of respect. I shall always remember him as a very special, talented, intelligent and a great conductor with unlimited knowledge of music.

Larry, dear friend, I shall miss you and so will many others. Sail in peace into your eternal rest, you earned it.

With my sincerest sympathy to the whole family,

Yours,

Helmut K. Hoenigsberg

VHS Choir 1974, 1975 first period mornings with Mr. Weiss -- every day. Voice scales, 4-part and novelty songs: he gave, and gave, and gave. It was easy to sing for him and for me to do my part as his student accompanist. Ever strong memories to keep in our hearts.

I was saddened today to hear about Larry Weiss's passing. I was in his music theory classes, choir, and got to know him even better as flag captain in the mid 70's. His enthusiasm for music was a positive influence in my life, and I went on as a music performance major at UCSB, and later in mid life began taking violin lessons and am still active in that. But more than that, I remember him as a good friend with a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor (something about a waterbed upstairs in the band room).

Always a friendly and whimsical hello at the mailboxes at Adult Ed. I did not know for years that he was the father of Susan, who I have known since the 80s. Our class was privileged to have Larry as a student of lifelong learning and quest for knowledge. Larry was uniquely musically talented, and generously share it with all of Ventura. Our class was envious as Larry had the most attentive family who never failed to visit and love his sweet generous soul. Godspeed Larry, we'll see you there !

February 23, 2013

To Scott Weiss,

My deepest sympathy go out to you and your family at this difficult time. Your Dad was a great man, a kind and gentle man who always treated people with respect and kindness. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. But for him, the journey of life has come to an end, and the legacy he leaves behind through his music and all of the students he inspired in his lengthily career as a teacher and mentor will live on forever. No more evident than in his own loving family, is a testament to the kind of man that he was. Most of us could only dream of accomplishing the things that he has done in his lifetime and the world is a better place for it. I have very fond memories of the 5 years that I played in the Ventura County Concert Band under his direction. He was a great leader and a great man and I have always considered it an honor and a privilege to have been involved in his musical career. There is only one word that can describe the life of Larry Weiss..........BRAVO!!!
We will all miss you, Rest In Peace.

To family and Friends of Mr. Weiss ... He was my choir & Music Appreciation teacher from 1969 to 1971 ... He taught me not only to appreciate music, but to appreciate, respect and learn from it all. He was tuff but yet so fair. All that were in his classes came away with a deeper and wiser understanding of not only music but what it brings to life, sorrow, joy, hope and future. I grieve with you and yours and I will surely miss his insight and strength. My heart is with him as he ascends to a higher level. The Angels now have a new Choir leader and we will be able to hear their singing always in our hearts.

February 23, 2013

Very sorry to hear of Mr. Weiss's passing.Bill Anderson and I were possibly his biggest pains from the class of 73, but we always came thru for him in Band and Orchestra--he always kept an eye on us in marching band! A great man---

Mr, Weiss was quite a talented musician, teacher, and many other positioned man who served very many students and community members through the groups he led and was a part of.
I, personally liked him as my VHS orchestra teacher. That position alone is one of the harder music groups to work with.
He added much to the world, and I pray blessings on his family for the rich musical inheritance he left.

Mr. Weiss' contribtion to the Ventura County Community Orchestra was legendary. The joy he brought to thousands of folks who attended the concerts and the knowledge he shared so lovingly were a sensational gift to the citizens of Ventura County. To the family I am certain you know your father made a huge impact on us all. The world will truly be a little dimmer without him.

February 23, 2013

I played in band, orchestra, the VHS marching band, and the pep band, all under the instruction of Mr. Weiss. He taught me to expand my horizons in many ways, but mostly by graduating me from a trumpet player to learn the french horn and the baritone under his guidance. May God bless his family and give them peace. Marty Sampson

I am unable to attend his service, but wanted to tell his family my story with their father. We used to call him Uncle Larry and bring him the orange crackers from the snack bar. He taught me about life, compassion and music. Madrigals were so beautiful and I still love them. I would often see him in town and he was happy to know that my children whom he met, loved music as well. He will always be loved and honored in my life. He was by far my favorite teacher of all times. I love him and will miss his presence. I feel honored to have been at the retirement concert for him and having my picture taken with him. I was so proud to know him. Scott and family, thank you so much for sharing him with us. God Bless You.

I am very sad to learn my Band and Orch. Teacher Mr. Weiss has passed. I too, was a trumpet player, he took interest in my abilities and guided me often in my performances. He was calm, with the knowledge that came from his extensive musical experience. I did not major in music, but always took a bit of his teaching with me when I performed with my college band, when I later organized international music tours or now when I attend my weekly concert band rehearsals. It has been almost 40 years since I left his classroom but the memories are still vivid. I am glad to know he is memorialized in the VHS Theatre and my thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Goodbye Mr. Weiss, thanks for everything.

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great inspiration to me during school and taught me a great deal . I remember him to have such a calm and understanding demeanor even while having to put up with quite a bunch of young rowdy students . Not all people get to leave this world peacefully, he earned it in my opinion. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Some people wish and hope to meet great people in their life. Mr. Weiss for me was one of those great persons. Rest in peace sir. T Matta, class of 1980.

I have fond memories of Larry, or Mr. Weiss, as I called him in high school when he was my band instructor.
